1. SHSM!! Specialist High Skills Major in Art & Design

2. What is SHSM? > The SHSM is a ministry- approved specialized program that allows students to focus their learning on a specific economic sector while meeting the requirements for the Ontario Secondary School Diploma.

3. What is SHSM? > This enriched education assists in their transition from secondary school to apprenticeship training, college, university, or the workplace.

4. At I.R.H.S. we offer a Specialist High Skills Major program in Art & Design!

5. Every SHSM must include the following components: 1.Course requirements: i 4 major Art, Comm Tech or Tech Design credits that provide sector-specific knowledge and skills. ii 2 other required credits with learning activities contextualized to the sector in English and Business iii 2 cooperative education credits that provide authentic learning experiences the workplace. These may be done during the school year or over the summer.

6. Every SHSM must include the following components: 2. sector-recognized certifications: 1.First Aid 2.CPR 3.WHMIS 4.Portfolio Development 5.Plus 2 more elective certifications (such as Photoshop or Autocad )

7. Every SHSM must include the following components: 3. experiential learning and career exploration activities within the sector; * such as field trips, guest speakers, enriched activities.

8. Every SHSM must include the following components: 4. “reach ahead” experiences connected with the student’s chosen postsecondary pathway; * These could range from a visit to a college, a university or a workplace to the completion of a dual credit.

9. What will the kids get out of it? A special diploma! 6 Certifications! A separate, special transcript! Experience in the field through Co-op! Networking opportunities for Post-Secondary Education and the workplace! An enriched education in Art & Design!
