1 TEXT STRUCTURES Central Idea, Text Features, Quantitative formats, and Word Choice

2 CENTRAL IDEA Central Idea is the important idea or message that author wants you to get. C.I. may be stated, but more often you must infer it from details. To identify a C.I.: first figure out the topic and then analyze the details. The details may include examples, quotes, facts, or evidence.

3 TEXT FEATURES Text Features are also used to determine C.I. Text Features such as : The Title, Subheadings, Italics Bold faced Bullet lists Sidebars Use these features to give you clues as to what is important.

4 QUANTITATIVE FORMATS Quantitative Formats: Information can be presented in a variety of formats and media Such as: maps, charts, graphs, photographs, diagrams, tables, and etc. all can be used to give details. Read the titles, labels, the numbers, and any text associated with these

5 WORD CHOICE Word Choice is also known as diction W.C. includes the vocabulary used, Connotation and denotation of vocabulary, The syntax (structure) of sentences, and Tone.
