APOSTROPHES I’m sure you won’t really listen © Graham Tyrer and Patrick Taylor 2013

Where do they go?  The first rule of apostrophe’s is that you put them in place of a space or a letter(s) that you’ve missed out:  Do not Don’t  Can notCan’t  I wouldI’d  We hadWe’d  You areYou’re (not your)  It isIt’s © Graham Tyrer and Patrick Taylor 2013

Secondly Possessive  When something belongs to someone(thing):  If the thing (i.e. James) has an S on the end the apostrophe will be added on the end without an extra s  Eliana’s hair  The Dog’s nose  The Dogs’ noses  James’ face  Toby’s only friend © Graham Tyrer and Patrick Taylor 2013

The nasty exception  NEVER use a possessive apostrophe when referring to it if something belongs to it we don’t use an apostrophe so that its is not confused with it’s (it is)  Its bed  Its pet mouse  It’s my pet mouse and it’s in my bed © Graham Tyrer and Patrick Taylor 2013

Plurals  If you have 2 or more of something you do not need an apostrophe  1 dog 2 dogs  1 chair 3789 chairs  1 sheep 2 sheep  1 girl 3 girls (playing golf in a colourful pyramid)  There is no apostrophe in GCSEs  Or 1970s etc (there is in the ’70s) © Graham Tyrer and Patrick Taylor 2013
