Salt Water Egg Experiment By Gracelynn 6D

Problem Will the egg be floating higher or lower in the salt if I change the water temperature?

Background Research If a water or liquid is colder, it will be more solid. It happens because of the molecules in colder liquid are closer together than in warmer liquids. So in frozen water, the molecules are so close to each other, which make the water more solid. But in streams, the water molecules are far away from one and another and they becomes vapor. www.ehow.com/info_12014292_temperature- affect-density-liquid-laboratory.html

Hypothesis I think that if I change the water temperature, if the water is colder, the egg will be floating higher than warm or cold water.

Equipment&Materials: Equipment: Materials: -1 regular size of egg. –Hot temperature water. -3 tall drinking glass. –Cold temperature water. -a table spoon (regular size –18 small spoons of salt. of spoon) and a small spoon. –Warm temperature of water. -ruler

Variable&Control: Independent : The water temperature and the amount of salt. Dependent :The height of the egg floating. Control :The size of the egg and the glass.

Steps or Procedure: Fill the 3 glass with different temperature of water. (cold, warm and hot) Put 4 small spoons of salt inside the 1 st glass (the cold water). Stir the water until the salt is mixed with the water. Put the egg inside the glass.

Measure how many centimeters does it floats. Take the egg out of the water. Put 2 more small spoons of salt in the water. Stir the salt in the water until it is mixed. Measure again how many centimeters does the egg floats on the top of the water.

Take the egg out of the water. Now do the experiment with the 2 nd glass which is the warm water. Put 4 small spoons of salt in the water. Stir the salt inside the glass until it is mixed up.

Measure how high does it float using the same tool like the cold water using the same ruler. Take the egg out of the water. Put 2 more small spoons of salt to the water. Stir the salt in the water until the salt is mixed with the water.

Put the egg back to the water. Measure how high does the egg floats. Take the egg out of the water. Now do the experiment with the hot water. Put 4 small spoons of salt to the glass.

Stir the water until it is mixed. Put the egg to the water. Measure how high does it floats. Take the egg out from the water. Now, put 2 more small spoons of salt to the water.

Stir the water again. Put the egg back to the water. Measure how high does the egg floats. Take the egg out from the water.

Data (4 spoons of salt)

Data (6 spoons of salt)

Conclusion So, if the water temperature is colder, the egg will float higher. It happens because of the water is more solid.
