Universe The universe is all existing matter and space considered as a whole. The universe is all existing matter and space considered as a whole.

Big Bang Theory (formation of the universe) During the Big Bang, all of the space, time, matter, and energy in the Universe was created. This giant explosion hurled matter in all directions and caused space itself to expand. As it cooled, the material in it combined to form stars.

The Hubble Telescope's deepest view of the universe teaches us about the beginning

FORMATION OF OUR SOLAR SYSTEM Pg. 3 & 4 E.Q. – To our knowledge, what is the universe made up of?

Milky Way Galaxy These stars were drawn together to make families of stars called galaxies. Our sun is a star that is part of a family of about 300 billion stars called the Milky Way Galaxy. The Milky Way Galaxy is a spiral galaxy. Our solar system is located at the end of one of the spiral arms.

Solar System A solar system refers to a star and all the objects that travel in orbit around it. A solar system refers to a star and all the objects that travel in orbit around it.

Nebula Most scientists agree that over 4.5 billion years ago, space was filled with gases and dust. This gigantic cloud of gases and dust is called a nebula.

The Carina Nebula, which is over 7,500 light- years away, is a stellar nursery. It is composed of gas and dust. This image was taken by the Hubble Telescope in 2009.

The Nebular Hypothesis The nebular hypothesis suggests that the bodies of our solar system formed from an enormous rotating cloud called a solar nebula. It was made up mostly of hydrogen and helium, with a small percentage of heavier elements.

Something disturbed the nebula, maybe an exploding star, and this caused the matter inside the nebula to begin to spin. Eventually the spinning matter began to clump together because of gravity. This is the Helix nebula which is found in the constellation Aquarius, 650 light-years away.

This produced a tremendous amount of heat which formed a star, our sun. Over the next 10-100 million years or so, the nebula cooled and more and more matter began to stick together. These formed what eventually became our solar system.

The Nebular Hypothesis (formation of the solar system) The solar system was formed when something caused the nebula to spin. Gravity caused the matter to clump together and form our Sun. The remaining matter formed the planets.

The 4 inner (terrestrial) planets formed from the denser materials.. The 4 outer planets (gas giants) formed from the lighter materials and gases.

Name That Planet Starting at the left with the sun, write the name of each of the planets.

Create a flow chart by putting the following terms in order from largest to smallest: Solar system Universe Sun Planets Galaxy (if you are having trouble, think about what each one includes)
