Access Prior Knowledge Lesson 4: How is chemical technology used in our lives? Opening Activity Open Science textbook to page 386. Open Science folder to review vocabulary words and outline for the chapter. Open Workbook to page 121A. Open Science journal and answer the following questions: 1- What is the difference between a replacement reaction and a combination reaction? 2- What does the Law of Conservation of Mass state? Review Content Cards and Q-Cards in bin, sharing with partners quizzing each other quietly. Log in to clickers using student ID number. Be ready to review home learning when timer goes off. Don't forget to write your home learning in your agenda page 123A.

Do you agree with the statement? The invention of antibodies helps cure bacterial diseases. YES NO

Do you agree with the statement? Materials such as nylon are found in nature. YES NO

Do you agree with the statement? A polymer is a molecule made of nonrepeating smaller molecules. YES NO

Do you agree with the statement? Using household cleaners incorrectly can harm you. YES NO

Chemistry & Health Penicillin was created by accident in 1928 when Alexander Fleming was growing bacteria in a dish and realizing that mold killed the bacteria. By the mid 1940’s this form of antibiotic became a life saving medicine. Vitamins are chemicals in food and we now know that we can get sick if we don’t get enough vitamins, eat your veggies! Fertilizers are chemicals that farmers add to soil and help food grow.

Chemistry & New Materials Silk is a natural material that is soft and strong. Nylon is a man-made silk-like fabric used in many things like tents, ropes & nets made from polymers. A polymer is a large molecule made up of many smaller units connected together Plastics are polymers made from petroleum, which makes it lightweight and last a long time.

Chemistry & Transportation Rubber naturally comes from trees and cracks in cold temperatures, but when heated and combined with sulfur you can use rubber all year long. Chemists have learned how to break down the larger petroleum molecule to make gasoline we use in cars.

Chemicals & Safety Chemicals can be dangerous as well as make our life better. Read all warnings and directions before using chemicals. BRAIN POP: Plastic

MatchQuest

TextQuest Answer in your Science Journal 1. What life-saving medicine was discovered in the 1920's? 2. Name the polymer used to make camping tents. 3. What should you do first before using chemicals at home? 4. Why is treated rubber better to use for car tires that untreated rubber? Don't forget to write your home learning in your agenda page 123A.
