1 8-1: The Counting Principle English Casbarro Unit 8

2 Vocabulary An outcome is the result of a single trial. The set of all possible outcomes is a sample space. A finite sample space has a countable number of outcomes and an infinite sample space has uncountable outcomes. An event consists of one or more outcomes of a trial. A factorial is defined as n! = n(n – 1)(n – 2)… 3(2)(1) for all positive integers. [0! = 1]

3 Independent events are events in which the outcomes of each do not affect one another- ex. Drawing a card and rolling a die Dependent events are events in which the outcome of one affects the outcome of another event- ex. Drawing a card without replacement and then drawing another. Independent Events and Dependent Events

A “make your own” adventure story has 6 starting points, gives 4 plot choices, and then 5 possible endings, How many stories are possible? 3. A password is 4 letters followed by 1 digit. Uppercase letters and lowercase letters may be used and are considered to be different letters. How many passwords are possible?
