STAR Modification of high-p T hadro-chemistry in Au+Au collisions relative to p+p Anthony Timmins for the STAR Collaboration 31st July 2009 Heavy-ion III parallel session  Motivation…  The STAR Experiment…  Results…  Summary…

STAR 2/14  Rare processes expected to scale with –R AA = 1 if heavy-ion collisions superposition of p+p  Deviations from 1 indicate new physics –R AA > 1 in d+Au 200 GeV –R AA ~ 0.2 high p T h  in Au+Au 200 GeV.. Motivation Nuclear modification factor… (STAR Collaboration) Nucl. Phys. A 757 (2005) 102

STAR 3/14 Motivation 2 particle correlations…  2 particle h  correlations reveal angular nature of suppression… –Trigger p T > 4 GeV/c, Associated p T > 2 GeV/c  p+p and d+Au 200 GeV show near and away side correlations… –Expected from (di) jet production  Away side absent in Au+Au 200 GeV… –Di-jet suppression (STAR Collaboration) Nucl. Phys. A 757 (2005) 102

STAR 4/14 Motivation  R AA << 1 and disappearance of back- back pairs… –Two major experimental observations from RHIC  Energy distribution in A+A jets clearly altered relative to p+p… –Jets are quenched at high p T  How might quenching affect the A+A jet chemistry relative to p+p? –Two ideas…

STAR 5/14 Motivation Parton flavor changing…  Hard scatter partons interact with A+A medium, some change flavor  Abundance of s quarks in QGP boosts Kaon R AA ~ factor of 2  Proton/pion R AA ~ 1 I F Fries and Liu, Phys. Rev. C77 (2008) 054902, see next talk by R Fries…

STAR 6/14 Motivation Medium modification of parton shower…  Parton cascade from hard scatter altered in medium… –Increase probability of parton splitting in MLLA formalism…  Mechanism may lead to higher p/  and K/  ratios in A+A jets.. –In medium fragmentation functions softened… Sepatta and Wiedemann, Eur.Phys.J.C55:293-302,2008 Jet energy

STAR 7/14 The STAR Experiment  p+p 200 GeV… –Data taken 2006 –EM Calorimeter triggered –Extend previously published spectra to higher p T  Au+Au 200 GeV… –Taken 2004 –Mixture of minimum bias and centrally triggered data –Again, pushes previous spectra out further… Both p+p and Au+Au analyses use TPC only tracking….

STAR 8/14 The STAR Experiment PID…  STAR has excellent PID at high-p T … –Invariant mass method used to identify K 0 S  Mass resolution ~5% –Relativistic rise dE/dx used to identify charged , K, p  dE/dx resolution ~8% arXiv:nucl-ex/0505026v2 STAR Preliminary

STAR 9/14 Results Kaon spectra…  p+p 200 GeV kaon spectra reaches out to ~13 GeV/c  Au+Au 200 GeV reaches out to ~8-9 GeV/c STAR preliminary STAR Preliminary p+p 200 GeV Au+Au 200 GeV Y Xu, Quark Matter 2009A Timmins, Quark Matter 2009

STAR 10/14 Results Pion spectra… p+p 200 GeV Au+Au 200 GeV  p+p 200 GeV pion/proton spectra reaches out to ~13 GeV/c  Au+Au 200 GeV reaches out to ~10 GeV/c Y Xu, Quark Matter 2009Phys. Rev. Lett. 97 (2006) 152301

STAR 11/14 Results K/  ratio at high-p T …  p+p minbias and EMC triggered ratios consistent  K/  (central Au+Au) > K/  (p+p) at high-p T  Differences applies for highest p T bins… –~9-11 GeV/c  Jet chemistry in heavy-ion collisions appears altered… STAR preliminary p T (GeV/c) Y Xu, Quark Matter 2009

STAR 12/14 Results R AA for identified particles…  R AA (K) > R AA (  )  Expected since… –. –Consistent with current flavor conversion predictions..  R AA (p) > R AA (  )… –Inconsistent with flavor changing predictions –Expected for splitting modification?  p/  ratio higher in Au+Au  R AA (  ) ~ R AA (  ) STAR preliminary p T (GeV/c) Y Xu, A Timmins, Quark Matter 2009

STAR 13/14 Results R AA as a function of system size…  Measure integrated R AA for p T > 5.5 GeV/c… – ~ 6.2 GeV/c  K/  (all centralities Au+Au) > K/  (p+p)  Higher ratio for Au+Au where ~ 20 –Jet chemistry changes in small systems? –Do we have to push higher in p T for changes in jet chemistry?  STAR plans on taking more Au+Au data… A Timmins, Quark Matter 2009

STAR 14/14 Summary  K/  ratio at p T > 9 GeV/c higher in central Au+Au compared to p+p at 200 GeV –Jet chemistry appears altered in Au+Au jets…  R AA (K) and R AA (p) > R AA (  ) for central Au+Au –Not a mass effect R AA (  ) ~ R AA (  ) –Higher R AA (K) consistent with current flavor conversion predictions –Higher R AA (p) inconsistent with flavor conversion predictions –Can modified parton splitting also contribute?  R AA (K) > R AA (  ) for peripheral Au+Au at p T ~ 6.2 GeV/c –Does jet chemistry change in small systems?
