2 How Ideas Spread There were three major ways Enlightenment ideas were spread through Europe…… 1.Salons 2. Encyclopedie 3. Printing Press

3 Salon The idea originated in France as a place where people could meet and exchange ideas Individuals would attend these gatherings at the home of a wealthy citizen. Topics of conversation could involve politics, social philosophies, art, etc.

4 Encyclopedie -Edited by Denis Diderot, this was a collection of Enlightenment Thinker’s works -Books that included everything known to man about science, technology, history, and the ideas of the Enlightenment. -Criticized the Church and government, and praised religious tolerance -Catholic Church banned it

5 Printing Press -Invented by Johannes Gutenberg -Allowed for the mass spreading of ideas through pamphlets, newspapers, books -quicker, more affordable, more people were able to be exposed to the printed word

6 What did Salons, The Encyclopedie, and the Printing Press do for the Enlightenment Period? 9 Classical Movements Classicism-art movement inspired by enlightenment and centered on order and reason Architecture-uses symmetry and math to create simple, but dignified buildings (ex: Thomas Jefferson’s home in Monticello, White House in D.C.

10 Drama/Writing Looked back to the classical Greek and Roman authors but maintained their devotion to reason Art-classicism of art focused on realistic and simplistic styles and colors of blues, yellows, and reds
