2 Key Word  Ethics- The system of explicit, philosophical and/or religious reflection on moral beliefs and practices to clarify what is right and wrong, and what human beings should freely do or refrain from doing

3 Christian Ethics  Developing a Right Relationship - With God -With Humanity  Actions and deed determine the relationship  Moral Norms- What are they?  Human Person- Image of God with intellect, free will, self determination  Faith and Works along with prayer and Sacraments to maintain ethics

4 Source of Ethics  The Bible- Only source for Pentecostals/Protestants, Primary source for Anglicans, Catholics, Orthodox  Focus on Key Passages  10 Commandements  Golden Rule (Commandment of Love)  Beatitudes  Final Judgement

6 10 Commandments  Revealed by God to …….? (Ex 20:1-17)  First 4 Refer to the Worship of God  Remainder- Neighbour and Society  Christians follow the Commandments out of LOVE, not FEAR  Virtue > Listing Sins  Basis for Structuring Life  Adapted into Governing Law

8  “ And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.”

9 Commandment of Love  Draws together all the Ethical Teachings  Jesus Stresses God’s love, with Salvation available through the love of God and Neighbours  Book of John Provides further insight “ Since God loved us so much, we also ought to love one another. No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is perfected in us” Jn 4:7-12

10 The Beatitudes

11 The Beatitudes (Mt 5:1-12)  ‘Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.  ‘Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.  ‘Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.  ‘Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.  ‘Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy.  ‘Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.  ‘Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.  ‘Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.  ‘Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.’

12 The Beatitudes  An Instruction from Jesus to those listening  7 Beatitudes praising for virtues that can be cultivated- Poverty of Spirit, meekness, hunger for righteousness etc  2 Beatutides praising people for being persecuted, promising future rewards  Guideline- How to live a Good Christian Life

13 Ethical Teachings- Lives of Christians  God is the Model of Love  Love binds the community  Love may involve suffering “Blessed are you when people hate you, when they exclude you and insult you and reject your name as evil, because of the Son of Man” Lk 6:22  Society- Laws  Right and Wrong?
