WATER QUALITY & IT’S EFFECTS ON LIVING THINGS SEC. 12.4 PG 454-463

SOURCES OF WATER POLLUTION I. Point sources: -comes from a small, specific area -easily detected & traced Ex) oil spills from boats, waste water treatment plants, mills, power plants

II. NON POINT SOURCES Come from many different sources Very difficult to control Often enter ground water & contaminate aquifers Ex: farmland pesticides, fertilizers, industrial spills

III. ACID PRECIPITATION

Chemicals from burning fossil fuels enter the air & combine with water in atmosphere Forms sulfurous acid, nitric and nitrous acid Lowers pH making ponds, lakes etc ACIDIFIED

HUMANS CAN MAKE A POSITIVE DIFFERENCE! HUMANS CAN MAKE A POSITIVE DIFFERENCE!

MONITORING WATERWAYS INVOLVES TESTING: 1) Water quality 2) Stream Invertebrates 3) Riverbank Vegetation 4) Salmonids See pg 462!

WATER QUALITY- WATER QUALITY- TEST FOR DISSOLVED MINERALS & CHEMICALS Polluted waters tend to have: Low dissolved oxygen high dissolved carbon dioxide High amts of Dissolved heavy metals High nutrient levels from fertilizer or sewage High silt content

STREAM INVERTEBRATES- STREAM INVERTEBRATES- AMOUNT & TYPES OF INVERTEBRATES CAN INDICATE HEALTH Certain species tolerate high levels of pollution &are indicators of POOR water quality EX: Tubifex worms & Midgefly larvae EX: Tubifex worms & Midgefly larvae Other species require high oxygen level and are indicators of GOOD water quality Ex: Stonefly and Dragonfly nymph Ex: Stonefly and Dragonfly nymph

RIVERBANK VEGETATION- RIVERBANK VEGETATION- PLANT LIFE ON EDGES OF WATERWAYS INDICATE HEALTH Vegetation acts like a filter to slow down & to catch sediments & debris from run off Vegetation provide habitat for many animals Water quality is usually higher where vegetation occurs along banks

SALMONIDS- SALMONIDS- HEALTH AND QUANTITY OF SMALL FISH INDICATES CLEANLINESS OF WATER Waterways that can support fish populations = healthy Salmon require: at least 6 parts per million of dissolved Oxygen in the water Low turbidity (low silt/debris) Cool temperatures (3-15 degrees) pH close to neutral
