INTERNATIONAL SOCIETY FOR TECHNOLOGY IN EDUCATION working together to improve education with technology What is D3? A strategic system of teaching and management practices that uses student information to impact classroom practice and achievement

INTERNATIONAL SOCIETY FOR TECHNOLOGY IN EDUCATION working together to improve education with technology NCLB ≠ D3 True D3 is not to be confused with an NCLB mandate Differences:  NCLB – focuses primarily on end-of-year summative data  D3 – a systemic process relating student information, instructional practice, professional development, and leadership

INTERNATIONAL SOCIETY FOR TECHNOLOGY IN EDUCATION working together to improve education with technology Essential Elements of D3 A successful D3 process includes:  Good baseline data;  Measurable instructional goals;  Frequent formative assessments;  Thoughtful use of summative data;  Professional Learning Communities;  Focused Instructional Interventions at all levels

INTERNATIONAL SOCIETY FOR TECHNOLOGY IN EDUCATION working together to improve education with technology GOOD BASELINE DATA MEASURABLE INSTRUCTIONAL GOALS Frequent formative assessments Professional learning communities rooted in student information Making instructional changes Essential Elements of D3 Scott McLeod

INTERNATIONAL SOCIETY FOR TECHNOLOGY IN EDUCATION working together to improve education with technology Why this? Why now? Adapted from the American School Board Journal/April 2005 How do we respond when we have evidence that our students are not learning? What are the assessment procedures currently in place in our district? How do we get data back to our teachers? How long does it take us to get that data back to them?

INTERNATIONAL SOCIETY FOR TECHNOLOGY IN EDUCATION working together to improve education with technology Why this? Why now? Do we have procedures in place to act on the data in a prompt way? How do students who need help actually get it? How do teachers whose results show that they need help get that help as well? Are our district and school goals focused and aligned across the board? Adapted from the American School Board Journal/April 2005

INTERNATIONAL SOCIETY FOR TECHNOLOGY IN EDUCATION working together to improve education with technology Multiple Measures – Key Issues The data we gather and analyze must be focused on the purpose of improving instruction for better student results. Schools cannot use summative student achievement measures alone for continuous school improvement without context. District level staff must ensure that system- wide efforts are aligned. 31 INTERNATIONAL SOCIETY FOR TECHNOLOGY IN EDUCATION working together to improve education with technology Multiple Measures – Key Issues If we want to get different results, we have to change the system that creates the results. Multiple measures can determine the difference between a “problem” and a “condition.” Adapted from: Bernhardt, V. L. (1998). Data analysis for comprehensive schoolwide improvement. Larchmont, NY: Eye on Education.
