5 DBQ Thesis Statements The thesis statement is the most important single part of the DBQ essay, so keep the following in mind… 1.The thesis is the main idea that you will develop in your answer, so make sure it clearly states exactly what you will prove in your essay 2.Your thesis must respond directly to all aspects of the question, not just one part 3.Your thesis must make a claim that you can back up with evidence from the primary sources

6 Our DBQ Prompt… DBQ Question: Was Joseph Stalin an effective leader? Analyze the documents and use your knowledge of the time period to evaluate both Stalin’s strengths and shortcomings as a leader.

7 DBQ Essay Structure If your thesis statement is a guide for how you interpret the evidence, your body paragraphs are where you actually interpret the evidence. Keep the following in mind… 1.Each paragraph should explain a different subtopic or key idea that proves your thesis 2.Each paragraph should be built around details and quotes from the primary sources that prove your thesis 3.Each paragraph should elaborate on the evidence with explanations of the details and quotes that show why the evidence backs up the thesis

9 Advanced Thesis: Clearly answers ALL aspects of the prompt in a clear and specific way Evidence – Pulls evidence from AT LEAST TWO documents – Addresses the source – Evidence strongly supports argument and main idea of the paragraph Analysis – Analysis fully explains the evidence – Analysis gives specific reasons how the evidence proves the argument Structure: Has an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion Proficient Thesis: Answers ALL aspects of the prompt, but might be short and not specific Evidence – Pulls Evidence from AT LEAST TWO documents – Evidence is short and the source is not fully addressed – Evidence supports argument, but not the best evidence Analysis – Analysis explains the evidence, but is short, unspecific, or simply repeats what the evidence says Structure: has an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion Basic Thesis: Restates the question and does not make an argument Evidence: Evidence is not from the documents, is inaccurate, or does not support the argument Analysis: Little or no explanation of the evidence.
