Definition: E-book A book that has been digitized and is available online. Because e-books usually exist in print and online versions, they are different from websites. The content in e-books has gone through an editorial process that helps to establish and verify its information. Glossary of Research Terms. Southwestern Oregon Community College, July 23 2009 (accessed August 24, 2010).

E-book Capabilities An electronic book is typically delivered over a computer network. E-book capabilities vary by vendor, but most offer hyperlink navigation and keyword searching within the text. Printing and downloading functions are usually available, but are restricted to protect copyrights. Library and Information Technology Glossary. University of North Texas Health Science Center Library. May 12, 2010 (Accessed August 24, 2010)

Access to the HINARI E-books is via the Find journals by A-Z drop down menus. First, we will click on the View complete list of journals – for a a listing of all the E-book titles. Note that the ‘other E-book Internet sites’ discussed in this module do not require HINARI login.

The HINARI E-books are noted at the top of the List of HINARI Journals drop down menu. Using the + Book: designation, the titles are organized in alphabetical order. From this list, there are no hypertext links to the full-text. You must go to the Find journals by A-Z drop down menus. Note: As of January 2011, 85 E-books were listed. This number continues to grow as staff adds more links to the books. To view what new titles have been added, you will need to recheck this list periodically.

We have opened the ’O’ listing from the Find journals by A-Z list drop down menus. The + Book: designation displays the titles of three books from Oxford University Press Books and CABI Publishing. We begin the overview of these resources by opening the Oxford Textbook of Medicine, 5 th edition (2010). In the future, access to HINARI E-books also will be from the Find journals by subject category drop down menus.

The Oxford Textbook of Medicine is one of the foremost international textbooks of internal medicine. It provides practical guidance on the clinical management and prevention of disease, with in-depth coverage of the traditional specialty areas. The initial page contains an ‘expandable’ table of contents that details the contents of each topic.

We have expanded the Contents for chapters 7 (Infection) and 8 (Sexually Transmitted Diseases). Note that, for most chapters, you can get a summary [Essentials] and view the graphics separately [Browse Figures].

We have displayed the Essentials of Chapter 8.1 – Epidemiology of sexually transmitted infections. You can click on the [Full Text] link for the complete text of this sub-chapter.

We have displayed the graphics separately by clicking on the [Browse Figures] option.

In this final Oxford Textbook of Medicine slide, we have clicked on the Save option from the web browser. You can save the information as a single html file to the computer’s C drive, a flash drive or a CD. To view it, you must use your web browser.

Another invaluable resource is The Oxford Handbook of Tropical Medicine, 3 rd edition. This handbook provides an accessible and comprehensive, signs- and-symptoms based source of information on medical problems commonly seen in the tropics. It serves as a practical guide to diagnosis and management for medical practitioners and students. This handbook contains the same features as the previously discussed Oxford Textbook of Medicine.

We have opened the ’C’ listing from the Find journals by A-Z list drop down menus. The + Book: designation displays the titles of books from three publishers: Elsevier Books, John Wiley & Sons and Lexis-Nexis/UK. Lexis-Nexis is a database of statutes and legal related information from global sources. It is a resource for developing a country’s health-related laws and policies. We will look at titles from Elsevier and Wiley.

From the ‘C’ drop down menu, we have opened one of the Elsevier Books titled Comprehensive and Molecular Phytopathology. This is one of 400+ Elsevier Books titles accessible from HINARI. From the Table of Contents page, you can view the various sections of the book. For each section, there are Preview, PDF, Related activities and Related reference work articles options.

We have opened the Conclusion PDF file of Comprehensive and Molecular Phytopathology. Return to Science Direct tab (title page of book) and click on Browse.

As previously noted, we have used the ‘C’ drop down menu to open an Elsevier Books titled Comprehensive and Molecular Phytopathology. To access a list of all the Elsevier Books, click on the Science Direct Browse button. You will be re-directed to Browse page of Science Direct.

In the Browse option box, we will delete the checks in the Abstracts only and Journals and Book Series boxes and click on Apply. After the new A page is displayed, we will click on the All button in the Journal/Book title A-Z list. This will list the 400+ Elsevier Books titles and Book Series accessible from HINARI.

We now have displayed an A-Z list of all Elsevier Books and Book Series. This slide displays the initial titles of the list. Note the green key icon that notes access to the specific titles.

From the ‘C’ drop down menu, we have opened the John Wiley & Sons publication titled Current Protocols: Essential Laboratory Techniques, one of 16 Current Protocols titles available via HINARI. For life sciences researchers, Current Protocols feature overviews that examine differing methodologies and enable the researcher to identify the right protocol for an experiment. All protocols are field tested and scrutinized by Wiley’s editorial boards.

From the Current Protocols drop down menu, we have clicked on the expanded table of contents to the Unit level for Chapter 4 and Chapter 9. For each Unit, you can link to an Abstract, Full Article (HTML) or PDF version. Note that there is a keyword Search option.

We have opened the HTML option for Unit 9.1 Conventional Light Microscopy. It is titled Parts of the Light Microscopy. Note the Jump to… drop down menu that enables you to access the other sections of this Unit.

Finally, we have displayed the PDF version of Unit 9.1 Note how it displays in a similar fashion to a book page. The links to the other options are at the top of the page.

Via the ’A’ listing in the Find journals by A-Z drop down menus, we have opened the American Psychiatric Publishing Textbook of Psychiatry, 5 th edition (2008), one of 16 psychiatry related E-books available from this publisher. Note that the chapters also have the Download PowerPoint Slideshow option. This format would be useful for presentations and lectures.

We have displayed Chapter 3.The Role of Psychiatric Measures in Assessment and Treatment. Note that you can access the sections of this chapter by clicking on the links in the left-column frame.

We have displayed the Clinical Decision Tree, Chapter 3. Note the options to Email a link, Bookmark This and either Print Section or Print Chapter. You also can save the specific text as an html document.

Via the ’A’ listing in the Find journals by A-Z drop down menus, we have accessed Applied Mycology, an E-book published by CABI, a not-for profit science based development and information organization. This is one example from the 21 titles in the human health and nutrition sub-set of CAB eBooks available via HINARI. These titles include Home Parenteral Nutrition, Integrated Food Safety and Public Health, and Parasitic Flatworms. Note: the CAB publications are large PDF files that are slow to download. You are able to download an individual chapter which is a considerably faster option.

We have opened the initial page of Applied Mycology. It is a PDF file that allows you to print all or part of the material.

From the page with the link to Applied Mycology, we have clicked on the listing for Human, Health, Food & Nutrition. This page gives you a listing of the CAB E-books in this broad subject category and links to the full-text for those available to HINARI users.
