2 2/6 Samsung’s Design Principles  Network architectures of 3GPP2 and non-3GPP2 (e.g. 3GPP, WiMAX) should be similarly evolved to be easily harmonized in the future. The architecture composed of ATE-GW (Advanced Technology Evolution Gateway) and Evolved BS is common architecture to 3GPP, 3GPP2 and WiMAX. The proposed functionalities of network entities are almost the same as those of 3GPP SAE and WiMAX network architecture. ATE-GW includes paging control, location update, and idle mode management functions. The common hardware platform can be used for supporting various access technologies.  The evolved network shall provide the handoff performance improvements for inter-technology L2 handoff (HRPD Rev’A and Rev’C, 3GPP, M-WiMAX, WLAN). Existing air handoff messages are modified and/or new air handoff messages are introduced in order to enable inter-technology L2 handoff. Inter-access gateway interface for transferring inter-technology context is to be provided in order to improve the inter-technology L2 handoff performance

6 6/6 Advantages of Proposed Architecture  The proposed architecture is almost the same as those of 3GPP and WiMAX architecture. Also, common H/W platform can be provided for supporting various access technologies  Handoff performance with legacy 3GPP2 network and other access technologies (e.g. 3GPP, WiMAX, WLAN) ATE GW provides the interface to support Layer 2 handoff with legacy PDSN and other access technologies  Light BS (comparing to Flat) and intelligent ATE GW Light BS with essential air-dependent functions can be simple and inexpensive  Various IP and security functions in ATE GW IP and security functions can be easily integrated in ATE GW
