1 Simplifying Algebraic Expressions
Lesson 4-2 Simplifying Algebraic Expressions

2 Do Now Identify the terms, like terms, coefficients, and constants. mn + 4m + 6n + 2mn Simplify the expression. 3x + 4x + 5y + 6 Simplify the expression. 5a - 2 – 3a + 7

3 Parts of Algebraic Expressions
Term – each part of an algebraic expression separated by addition or subtraction signs Example: 3x, 7, x, 2 Like terms – terms that contain the same variables Example: 3x and x, 7 and 2 Coefficient – the numerical part of a term that contains a variable Example: 3 and 1 Constant – a term without a variable Example: 7 and 2

4 Simplifying Expressions with Parentheses
−4(3𝑚 + 2𝑛) – 5𝑚 + 𝑦 1 4 𝑚+2𝑛 − 1 3 (3𝑚−3𝑛)

5 Simplifying Expressions Practice
2 𝑥−𝑦 +3𝑥 1 3 6𝑎+3𝑏 − 1 2 (𝑎−2𝑏)

6 Simplifying Expressions Practice

7 Applying Algebraic Expressions
Write an expression in simplest form for the perimeter of the rectangle.

8 Applying Algebraic Expressions Practice
Write an expression in simplest form for the perimeter of each rectangle

9 Writing and Simplifying Algebraic Expressions

10 Writing and Simplifying Algebraic Expressions Practice
For each situation write an expression in simplest form that represents the total amount. You used p minutes one month on your cell phone. The next month you used 75 fewer minutes. Mateo has y pairs of shoes. His brother has 5 fewer pairs.
