Luke 23:32-43 34 Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” And they divided up his clothes by casting lots…. 43 Jesus answered him, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.”

Luke 23:44-47 46 Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.” When he had said this, he breathed his last. 47 The centurion, seeing what had happened, praised God and said, “Surely this was a righteous man.”

THE LORD’S SUPPER

Stephen ACTS 6:8–8:3

INTRODUCTION God’s people are men and women of integrity holding strong faith and bold truth. They trust God to accomplish His purpose even if He allows tragedy to strike. They know that God can accomplish His plan in the midst of their apparent loss.

STEPHEN 1. We see his integrity against the backdrop of Religious Political Intrigue Acts 6:8 – 15

ACTS 6:8–15 8 Now Stephen, a man full of God’s grace and power, performed great wonders and signs among the people. 9 Opposition arose…. Jews of Cyrene and Alexandria… the provinces of Cilicia and Asia… began to argue with Stephen.

ACTS 6:8–15 10 But they could not stand up against the wisdom the Spirit gave him as he spoke. 11 Then they secretly persuaded some men to say, “We have heard Stephen speak blasphemous words against Moses and against God.”

ACTS 6:8–15 13 They produced false witnesses who testified, “This fellow never stops speaking against this holy place and against the law. 14 For we have heard him say that this Jesus of Nazareth will destroy this place and change the customs Moses handed down to us.” 15 All who were sitting in the Sanhedrin looked intently at Stephen, and they saw that his face was like the face of an angel.

ACTS 6:8–15 15 All who were sitting in the Sanhedrin looked intently at Stephen, and they saw that his face was like the face of an angel.

STEPHEN 1. Integrity 2. Strong Faith and Bold Truth ACTS 7:1-53

ACTS 7:1-53 39 “But our ancestors refused to obey him [Moses]. Instead, they rejected him and in their hearts turned back to Egypt…. 51 “You stiff-necked people! Your hearts and ears are still uncircumcised. You are just like your ancestors: You always resist the Holy Spirit!

ACTS 7:1-53 52 Was there ever a prophet your ancestors did not persecute? They even killed those who predicted the coming of the Righteous One. And now you have betrayed and murdered him— 53 you who have received the law that was given through angels but have not obeyed it.”

STEPHEN 1. Integrity 2. Strong Faith and Bold Truth 3. Continued trust in God even if tragedy strikes ACTS 7:54-60

ACTS 7:54-60 Stephen followed Christ forgiving his persecutors. 59 While they were stoning him, Stephen prayed, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.” 60 Then he fell on his knees and cried out, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them.” When he had said this, he fell asleep.
