3 Bell Work 9/24/13 & 9/25/13 Rule 1: Use a comma between the dialogue and the tag line. (The words used to identify the speaker: "he said/she said"): "I would like to go to the beach this weekend," she told him as they left the apartment. Rule 2: Periods and commas go inside the quotation marks in American writing. "I don't want any stupid cake," says the guy who goes to Europe and the Middle East. "Where's the champagne?" he says, and laughs.

4 Bell Work 9/24/13 & 9/25/13 Correct the punctuation in the following dialogue: I don’t want to go to the homecoming dance said Jill. Why not asked her mother. Because Jill replied. The person I wanted to go with already asked someone else. Hint: You should add 11 new punctuation marks.

5 Essay Feedback All students who scored below 70% must revise after tutoring session. Parent contacts will be made. Revised essays must be submitted by Friday. Common Errors: Essay Format Symbol, Paragraphs, or Thesis Were Not Developed Punctuating Dialogue Pronoun Use (“I” versus “Me”) Dead Word Use: (“like,” “stuff,” “so,”) Texting Abbreviation Use: (“mins,” for “minutes,” “cause,” for “because,” and “wanna,” for “want to”)

The struggle takes place in the character’s mind. External ConflictA struggle against an outside force opposing a character. The force may be another character, society, or nature. ForeshadowingA warning or indication of a future event.

7 The Schwa Was Here The Schwa Was Here: Novel Unit Cornell Notes MetaphorFigure of speech that makes a comparison between two unlike things, in which one thing becomes another thing without the use of the word like, as, than, or resembles. Onomatopoeia Use of a word whose sound imitates or suggests its meaning. “Crackle, pop, fizz, click, zoom, and chirp are examples.” Alliteration Repeated consonant sounds at the beginnings of words in the same phrase. “Where the green grass grows…”
