“A Journey Through Texas” October 15

2 Do Now Write whether each sentence uses the semi colon correct, or incorrect. George Orwell's essay "Shooting an Elephant" is about a rampaging elephant; and Orwell's decision to shoot this elephant. George Orwell's essay "Shooting an Elephant" is about a rampaging elephant; Orwell reluctantly decides to shoot this elephant. A draft of my first essay is due on Monday; I also need to read the second chapter of the textbook. The sunny days in Florida; however, gave me a bad sunburn. I enjoyed spending a week in Florida; however, it was nice to return home after the long vacation.

5 Exploration Narrative
Fact-Based, but subjective impressions An author's description of his experience seeing an unfamiliar place. Subjective look at a place through the eyes of the author. While travel guides inform, exploration narratives describe and entertain. Uses imagery to describe the setting

Records information about the writer’s own travels to an unfamiliar place – objective reports. Tells about real people, places, objects and events Records daily events and personal observations

7 Today We will examine another narrative selection Reading: “Journey through Texas” Author: Alvar Nunez Cabeza De Vaca About the Selection: Cabeza De Vaca was a Spanish Adventurer whose views and beliefs were altered by his experiences living with Native Americans. This narrative describes his journey to Mexico City through what is now known as Texas.
