1 English 11B JOURNALS FOR THIRD TRIMESTER 2011-2012

2 English 11B JOURNAL REQUIREMENTS & EXPECTATIONS Journals are worth 10% of your marking period grade. Please set up the first page in MLA FORMAT (heading & header) Please write the requirements (on the following 2 slides) on this first page and submit it as the cover page for your journals.

3 English 11B JOURNAL REQUIREMENTS & EXPECTATIONS 1. Write the TITLE and # for all journal entries. Write the DATE the journal was assigned. If you were absent-write the date assigned noting you were absent and write the date you made it up. 2. You are to write in COMPLETE SENTENCES. Think of journals as mini-essays. Have a TOPIC SENTENCE that relates to the prompt. Use SPECIFIC EXAMPLES to illustrate/defend your comments. Make sure you answer ALL PARTS of the prompt.

4 English 11B JOURNAL REQUIREMENTS & EXPECTATIONS 3. Use a concluding sentence to wrap up your journal entry. *Journals are expected to be a minimum of ½ page. If shorter, you probably have not explained yourself fully using an example(s) to show your idea(s). 4. Take the time to PROOF READ your journals before you turn them in. -Check for correct spelling -Check for complete sentences -Make sure you have answered ALL parts of the prompt.

5 English 11B Journal #1: Violence How do you define “violence”? What are examples of violent acts versus non- violent acts? Is violence limited to actions?

6 English 11B JOURNAL #2: Violent Media Does Violent media (video games, movies, music, etc.) cause violent behavior? Explain your answer in ½ page. Use specific examples and details. Consider the opposing viewpoint in your response.

7 English 11B JOURNAL #3: Quixotic Quixotic means to be well-intentioned but a foolishly idealistic dreamer. What does this mean in your own words? What are the pros & cons of this? Read quickwrite on page 688 and discuss.

8 English 11B Journal #4: “The Best” If it were possible to live in the “best of all possible worlds,” right here on earth, what would such a place be like? What kinds of things would you not find there? If someone told you that we are already living in the “best of all possible worlds,” how would you respond?

9 English 11B Journal #5: Vocab. in Life Using the vocabulary words from the story Candide, write a paragraph or a conversation in which you use all 7 words correctly. HIGHLIGHT (or circle) the vocabulary word. UNDERLINE the definition or meaning used in the conversation to show you “own” the meaning of the word.

10 English 11B JOURNAL #6:Suspicion Define suspicion. How can being suspicious affect your views of the people and world around you? Explain.

11 English 11B JOURNAL #7:Bailout Suppose you have been caught committing a crime and are arrested. Should your parents bail you out or let you spend a night in jail? Explain.

12 English 11B JOURNAL #8: “A Problem” Define honor. Consider how honor is viewed differently among different cultures. Do people today seem to care about “family honor”? How about “personal honor”? Explain.

13 English 11B JOURNAL #9: A Secret Define secret. Explore in a minimum of ½ page the concept of a secret. What purpose does it serve? When is it ok to keep a secret? When should you not keep a secret? Does the type of relationship relate to the value of a secret? Etc. Read page 882

14 English 11B JOURNAL #10: Characters What is the difference between a static and a dynamic character? Identify a static and a dynamic character from a piece of literature you have read or a movie you have seen. Defend your choices with support from the story line. Make sure that you explain the cause for the change in the dynamic character.

15 English 11B JOURNAL #11: Marriage Describe some common views of marriage. Do female views seem to differ from male views? Explain. What are the roles of “romance” or “fairy tale” versus “reality” in a marital relationship?

16 English 11B JOURNAL #12: VOCABULARY ACTIVITY Write a mini-story (more than one paragraph) in which you create a couple of characters and establish a setting and a conflict. Within your writing, correctly use each of the 5 vocabulary clues with context clues. Underline the words and the clues.

17 English 11B Mini-Sample (one vocab word and context clue) Tom thought he was so charming. With his blond hair and blue eyes and dazzling smile, it was rare that he did not get a positive response from the ladies. He fancied himself suave, smooth with the lines. So the slap across the face from Sara, his latest target, caught him completely off guard.

18 English 11B BEGIN BLESS ME ULTIMA! The remaining journals pertain to the novel. Follow the instructions given pertaining to the novel.
