1 Lunar Phases

2 Motions of the Moon The moon moves in two ways just like the Earth:
It ROTATES on its axis It REVOLVES around Earth because of Earth’s gravitational pull on the Moon. The changing relative positions of the moon, Earth and sun cause phases of the moon, eclipses, and tides.

3 Motions of the Moon It takes 29.5 days to rotate on its axis
It takes 29.5 days to revolve around Earth A “day” and a “year” are the same length on the moon The same side of the moon always faces Earth.

4 Phases of the Moon The moon does NOT produce its own light.
The light we see is REFLECTED from the sun. The different shapes of the moon that we see from Earth are the PHASES of the moon. The phases are caused by changes in the relative positions of the moon, Earth, and sun. The phase of the moon you see depends on how much of the sunlit side of the moon faces Earth.

5 Phases of the Moon New Moon
The moon is between Earth and sun and CAN NOT be seen (no light is reflecting from the moon)

6 Phases of the Moon Waxing Phases = the lighted section grows larger each night

7 Waxing Phases Waxing Crescent First visible thin slice of moon

8 Waxing Phases First Quarter Half the lighted side of moon is visible
Crescent

9 Waxing Phases Waxing Gibbous More than one quarter is visible Waxing
Crescent First Quarter

10 Waxing Phases Full Moon All the moon’s lighted side is visible Waxing
Crescent First Quarter Waxing Gibbous

11 Phases of the Moon Waning Phases = the lighted section gets smaller after the full moon

12 Waning Phases Waning Gibbous
Starts after a full moon when more than half of lit side of moon is still visible Full Moon

13 Waning Phases Third Quarter
Only half of the moon’s lighted side is visible Full Moon Waning Gibbous

14 Waning Phases Waning Crescent Last visible slice before a new moon
Full Moon Waning Gibbous Third Quarter

15 Lunar Phases The time from one new moon to the next new moon is called a lunar month Waxing Crescent Waning Crescent First Quarter Waxing Gibbous Full Moon Waning Gibbous Third Quarter
