BEHAVIOR ASSESSMENT SYSTEM FOR CHILDREN 2 ND EDITION (BASC-2) Misti Rohde EDUC 535 February 26, 2012

The Authors History of the BASC-2 Published in 1992 as a multi-method, multi- dimensional tool. Revisions were made and by 2004 there was a second edition of the BASC published. Cecil R. Reynolds, Ph.d.-- Research Scientist and Professor Texas A & M University Randy Kamphaus, Ph.D. Dean, College of Education Georgia State University

The Purpose of the BASC-2 The BASC-2 is designed to assess observable behavior and self- perceptions. The primary purpose is to assist in the classification of emotional and behavioral disorders and to aid in the development of treatment plans. This assessment is available for three different age ranges: Individuals between the ages of 2-25 years old can be assessed. Each observation takes about 10-20 minutes.

This is a behavior assessment so there aren’t subtests, but there are three different rating scales for student behavior. 1. The Teacher Rating Scales (TRS) 2. The Student Observation System 3. The Parent Rating Scales (PRS) 4. The Self-Report of Personality (SRP) Four Scales of the BASC-2

Reliability Reliability: There is a high internal consistency and high to low test-retest reliability and inter-rater reliability. Highest test-retest correlations for the TRS and PRS are Hyperactivity, Aggression, Atypical behaviors, Withdrawal, and Attention Problems.

The BASC-2 includes a number of indexes designed to help determine the validity of the assessment. The TRS and the PRS indexes include the F index, Consistency Index, and Response Pattern Index. The SRP has these indexes but also offers and L index and V index. Validity

Summary of Validity Evidence Teacher and Parent forms can help to effectively identify students with externalizing problems. The Student form can effectively identify students with internalizing problems. Teacher, Parent, and Student forms have been shown to predict academic success, for up to 4 years from behavior rating

For all forms the items are added together to find the total score. Raw scores are converted to T scores with a mean of 50 and a standard deviation of 10. They are also converted into percentages. The range for risk level for behavioral and emotional problems 20 to 60: “normal” level of risk 61 to 70: “elevated” level of risk 71 or higher: extremely elevated level of risk Scoring Procedure

Administering the Self-Report, TRS, and PRS Select a Rater: Client, Parent, and/or Teacher Establish Rapport and Give Instructions Complete Form Check

The BASC-2 has been used for many reasons: To determine risk, onset, course and progression of behavioral problems. To predict the validity of early temperament. To identify adolescents who may benefit from residential treatment centers. What do we learn from the assessment?

My Assessment of the BASC-2 Fairly easy to administer Assessment is not time consuming Language friendly for parents Provides important information about student behaviors. The BASC-2 provides “checks” to keep an adult or child from being biased.
