HANDLE BY Mr. A. GOVANDAN AP / CIVIL

Objective The student is introduced to  The definition and properties of fluid.  Principles of fluid statics, kinematics and dynamics are dealt with subsequently.  The application of similitude and model study is covered subsequently.  Fluid properties and application to real situations of fluid flow.

Introduction  Fluid Mechanics is concerned with the behavior of fluids at rest and in motion  Field of Fluid Mechanics can be divided into 3 branches: Fluid Statics: mechanics of fluids at rest Kinematics: deals with velocities and streamlines w/o considering forces or energy Fluid Dynamics: deals with the relations between velocities and accelerations and forces exerted by or upon fluids in motion

Course Organization  UNIT I :Fluid Properties and Fluid Statics  UNIT II: Fliud Kinematics and Dynamics  UNIT III: Flow Through Pipes  UNIT IV: Boundary Layer  UNIT V: Dimensional Analysis and Model Studies

Fluid Properties And Fluid Statics Basic definition of fluid Distinction between solids and fluids. Units and Dimensions Properties of fluid Concept of static, gauge and absolute pressure Pressure measurement Bouncy and floatation

Fluid Kinematics and Dynamics Velocity field and acceleration Continuity equation Stream function and velocity potential function Flow net Euler's equation Bernoulli's equation and it’s applications

Flow Through Pipes Laminar flow between parallel plates Laminar flow through circular tubes Darcy -Weisbach's equation Moody's diagram Major and minor losses

Boundary Layer Boundary layer on a flat plate Boundary layer separation Boundary layer control Drag and lift coefficients

Dimensional Analysis and Model Studies Dimensional homogeneity Dimensionless parameters Similitude and model studies Distorted Models
