3  At the beginning of the play, Juliet is an obedient sheltered child.  Even though many girls her age get married and bare children, Juliet does not feel ready for this life.  Juliet gives glimpses of her determination, strength, and sober-mindedness, in her earliest scenes, and offers a preview of the woman she will become during the four-day span of ‘Romeo and Juliet’.  At the beginning of the play, Juliet is an obedient sheltered child.  Even though many girls her age get married and bare children, Juliet does not feel ready for this life.  Juliet gives glimpses of her determination, strength, and sober-mindedness, in her earliest scenes, and offers a preview of the woman she will become during the four-day span of ‘Romeo and Juliet’.

4  Juliet firsts meets Romeo at the ‘Capulet Ball’ but doesn’t know his identity.  Immediately they both fall in love.  Unfortunately she finds out that he is the son of Lord Montague who is her families greatest enemy.

5  After hearing Juliet’s words, Romeo comes out of hiding  Juliet is at first alarmed at his sudden appearance. When she realizes who it is, she tells Romeo that if any Capulet knew of his presence in her garden, they would murder him.  Romeo replies, “There lies more peril in thine eye than twenty of their swords.”  Both confess their love for one another, Romeo swearing his love by the moon. Juliet warns him against swearing by the inconstant moon that monthly changes in its circled orb, lest his love should prove likewise variable.  The lovers pledge themselves to each other and exchange vows.

6  Juliet is innocent. She is not responsible for the feud between the two families.  She is ecstatic She is happy to be marrying Romeo.  She is immature. She does not count the cost of her actions.  She is trusting. She puts her life in the hands of Friar Laurence.  She is determined. She will not marry Paris even though her father has arranged it.

7  “O Romeo, O Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo? Deny thy father and refuse thy name, Or if thou wilt not, be but sworn my love, And I’ll no longer be a Capulet.”  “O happy dagger”  “My bounty is as boundless as the sea,My love as deep;the more I give to thee,The more I have,for both are infinite”  “Do not swear by the moon for she changes constantly.then your love would also change”  “My only love sprung from my only hate”

8  Juliet asks the friar where her husband is. Hearing a noise that he believes is the coming of the watch, the friar quickly replies that both Romeo and Paris are dead, and that she must leave with him.  Juliet refuses to leave, and the friar, fearful that the watch is imminent, exits without her. Juliet sees Romeo dead beside her, and surmises from the empty vial that he has drunk poison.  Hoping she might die by the same poison, Juliet kisses his lips, but to no avail.  Hearing the approaching watch, Juliet unsheathes Romeo’s dagger and, saying, “O happy dagger,” and stabs herself. She dies upon Romeo’s body.
