HFM SAN Distance Learning Project Teacher Survey 2006 – 2007 School Year... BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Section B Teacher Comments

HFM SAN Distance Learning Project Teacher Survey 2006 – 2007 School Year... BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ It gives students the ability to interact with students from other districts and have expanded perspectives, outside of the usual cultural makeup of students in the home school alone. Allows teachers to reach out to remote locations with materials and lessons that would otherwise not be available. This is particularly valuable in less advantaged regions with less access to more diverse subject matter. We can offer more classes to other places we also benefit from the rapport with other schools. The main strength is the availability of a course to a school with a small population of students who would not otherwise be offered such a course. Using technology that is not available in regular classes. Meeting new students is an asset for both students and teacher. The sound was vastly improved. 1. What are the strengths of distance Learning? Comments

HFM SAN Distance Learning Project Teacher Survey 2006 – 2007 School Year... BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ Just the limitations of the television set. This is not overly restrictive though. The [lack of] "over the shoulder" that a teacher can provide in the regular classroom. This can be accomplished through the technology of the visual overhead Elmo. Warehousing students who aren't appropriate to the elective being taught. Inability to have students from distant site work in small groups with home sites. Teaching aides who don’t really understand DL issues - Administrators who don’t allow students to attend our only field trip - complications involving discipline and detention for remote students. The difficulty in truly getting to know the students in the off-site schools as well as I know my students. I highly recommend teachers visits to the off site locations preferably in the first two months. I should have made my visits in October … 2. What are the weaknesses of Distance Learning? Comments

HFM SAN Distance Learning Project Teacher Survey 2006 – 2007 School Year... BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ There should be a standard protocol for transferring material in addition to the Fax Machine. There should be a standard 'form' document that is transferred from each site to the other dealing with issues such as Discipline and payment for books etc. Train the administrators on DL policy - train remote aides on DL policy - Create a uniform DL policy between different DL regions. Built in Blackboard with every DL class. Have only students that really want to take the class actually take it. Better Tech support at other sites. Improvements in audio since DL students were difficult to hear. Better access for class computers. 3. What changes would you suggest for distance learning classes? Comments

HFM SAN Distance Learning Project Teacher Survey 2006 – 2007 School Year... BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ I was surprised at how much of a connection I was able to develop with some of the off site students considering some of the limitations of the screens etc. I became comfortable with a wide range of technology and DL students/TAs enriched our learning with experiences from their lives. I also got to meet with DL colleagues at other schools. I was surprised with the lack of support from remote school. Yes! It's funny how much the student's view me- their teacher as a pseudo celebrity simply because I am teaching via TV. They seem to pay attention more ! Who would have thought! I became much more familiar with the districts in the receive site through visits and interaction with students. I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. It effectively meets the needs of the students as if all the students were at the home site. 4. Are there any outcomes from teaching this course that you had not expected? Comments

HFM SAN Distance Learning Project Teacher Survey 2006 – 2007 School Year... BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ I use different forms of "Ice breakers" at the beginning of the school year to encourage interaction between schools. I utilized the Elmo pretty frequently. I also was able to use the computer (at the beginning of the class) which facilitated the teaching process. I used software to demonstrate a concept but had to bring in a laptop at my site. Next year we will have a computer next to our DL panel and will be able to access software for demonstrations. Yes…I used a Blackboard site for homework submission and email instead of fax of homework. Labs had to be modified so students ended up doing independent research more often which was good. Also I was able to share many real-life examples and images using the technology. I used Power Point more often. The use of the Elmo made it possible to display material you would not be able to display in a traditional classroom (Text). Comments 5. Did you use any new instructional methods to effectively teach in the DL classroom?

HFM SAN Distance Learning Project Teacher Survey 2006 – 2007 School Year... BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ Email, phone and BOCES stops at our school once a week. One of my remote schools is in a different BOCES so I used the US mail. Email occasionally. I am developing a blackboard site for next year. “tappedin.org” and email. Yes. We met for review classes together and met together for guest speakers. I showed up for surprise visits a couple of times. I visit the remote site each quarter. We went on three field trips. Comments 6. Did you use any other forms of communication with the students in addition to daily …... distance learning classroom instruction (such as e-mail or telephone)?

HFM SAN Distance Learning Project Teacher Survey 2006 – 2007 School Year... BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Comments 7. Did you visit your remote sites? No Yes No response

HFM SAN Distance Learning Project Teacher Survey 2006 – 2007 School Year... BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ I visited my remote site four times. It was a big plus to getting to know each other. I visit each school twice a year. It helps with rapport. Not this year. One site was over two hours away. It would not have been fair to visit one remote school but not the other remote school. Three times. These experiences were all positive except the time I forgot to let the DL Network helpdesk know I was going! My fault. The visits to the remote site gave those students a chance to interact with us person-to-person. Visited one of the remote sites twice. It was a great opportunity to meet the students. I wish I could have done it more often. Yes, once they visited us here. An advantage was meeting them face-to-face. There was unity when all students met. A disadvantage was having to take the day off to travel there. Comments 7B. What were the advantages / disadvantages to visiting your remote school(s)?
