1 The “Effects” of Summer Slide Allendale Public Schools June 10, 2015

2 What is Summer Slide? It can be defined as the loss of academic skills over the summer break. When kids don't read, work math problems, or aren't engaged in other learning experiences, their education doesn't continue and can actually regress.

3 What does the research say? Most students lose about two months of grade level equivalency in mathematical computation skills over the summer months (Cooper, 1996). Students typically score lower on standardized tests at the end of summer vacation than they do on the same tests at the beginning of the summer (White, 1906; Heyns, 1978; Entwisle & Alexander 1992; Cooper, 1996; Downey et al, 2004). Parents consistently cite summer as the most difficult time to ensure that their children have productive things to do (Duffett et al, 2004).

5 What can I do? Make time to read every day Take a field trip. Learn a new word each week. Play quick games with flashcards. Listen to audio books.

6 Take pictures and make a summer scrapbook. Buy or create a book of games you can play in the car. Limit television, computer and video game time. Take your children to summer library and bookstore programs. Reward system for the number and level of books reads. What can I do?
