1 The Bulletproof Résumé A presentation by Mr. Gansky

2 Minimum Requirements No more than 1 page (front and back okay). Must have easy to find contact info. Name, Address, Phone Numbers, Professional E-mail Must have an objective. What you’re goal is in terms of employment Must have educational background. High School, all colleges attended

3 Minimum Requirements Must have work history. At least three most recent jobs Employer, employer contact info, job title, responsibilities, dates worked, reason for leaving, beginning and ending pay, immediate supervisors. References At least three. Should not be family. How you know them (and how long), your relationship to them, and contact info.

4 Above and beyond: Include additional awards or certificates you may have won or hold. Include contests you’ve won. Include personal characteristics that you’re proud of (works well with others, skilled with computers, able to handle stressful situations, etc.)

5 AESTHETICS Use a design that grabs attention. Use nice paper, professional font. Employers first impressions hangs specifically on the amount of time and effort you put into your résumé.

6 JOB DESCRIPTIONS Use job descriptions that match the job you’re applying for. Additionally, these descriptions should sound strong: Management of A/R and A/P Accounts v. Accounting Assistant. Which sounds stronger?

7 JOB RESPONSIBILITIES Job responsibilities should also sound strong: Maintained records for accounts receivable and accounts payable v. Managed over 1,000 accounts receivable and payable while working directly with the Chief Financial Officer

8 POWER WORDS Use power words—strong verbs. “Gave work assignments to staff of entry level accounting clerks” v. “Directed workflow, supervised and trained accounting staff performing posting to general ledger, accounts receivable and payable accounts.”

9 IDENTIFY KEY WORDS Read want ads for key words. “Seeking experienced A/R Manager to oversee accounts, manage billing and collections, train accounting and clerical staff.” Key words: experience, oversee, train, manage etc.

10 PRIORITIZE CONTENT Résumés should give only most important info. If you were a janitor for three years, but you are applying for an accounting position, focus on your education and accounting experience.

11 TAILOR TO YOUR SPECIFIC JOB No one résumé is perfect for ANY job. They must be directed toward a specific job to best utilize the proper vocabulary and focus to most impress the potential employer. If you’re applying for three different jobs, how many different résumés should you have?
