 3.5 More on Linear Equations Objective: solve more complicated equations that have variables on both sides.

Steps for Solving Linear Equations 1. Simplify each side by distributing and/or combining like terms. 2. Collect variable terms on the side where the coefficient is greater. 3. Use inverse operations to isolate the variable. 4. Check your solution in the original equation.

Solution Steps  Simplify an equation before you decide whether to collect the variable terms on the right side or the left side.

Solve 4(1 – x) + 3x = -2(x + 1)

Solve -3(4x + 1) + 6x = 4(2x – 6) 6(x + 3) + 3x = 3(x – 2)

Solve 4x + (2 – x) = -3(x + 2)-2(4x + 2) = -2(x + 3) + 9

Solve  ¼(12x + 16) = 10 – 3(x – 2)

Word Problem  A health club has two payment plans. You can become a member by paying a $10 new member fee and use the gym for $5 a visit. Or, you can use the gym as a nonmember for $7 a visit. Compare the costs of the two payment plans.  Find the number of visits for which the plans would cost the same.
