Bundle 6: Chemistry

1.Glue your Density Warm Up in your notebook and DO IT! 2.When finished with the Density Warm Up, glue the graduated cylinder pictures in your notebook and try to determine the volume of fluid in each cylinder. (You and your neighbor will NOT have the same ones so do your own work!) WARM UP 11/17/15

Density is a material specific property of Matter. Everything that has matter, has density. Density is determined using the formula, DENSITY

You can measure the mass of an object using a Triple Beam Balance. MASS OF AN OBJECT

There are two ways to get the volume of an object.  Measure the displacement of fluid by the object in a graduated cylinder in [mL]. (Irregular shaped objects)  Calculate the volume of a rectangular object using V = L x W x H by measuring each side in [cm]. VOLUME OF AN OBJECT

To read the water level on a graduated cylinder, you have to get on eye level with the bottom of the meniscus. HOW TO READ A GRADUATED CYLINDER

Let’s recreate the warm up in your IAN notebook for practice. 1.Cut out the two graduated cylinders on your worksheet. 2.Shade one to the 200 mL mark and shade the second to the mark 6 lines above the 200 mL mark. 3.This will be your Density Problem similar to the Warm Up. NOTEBOOK PRACTICE

In your notebook, DRAW the rocks where you see them in the picture on your Graduated Cylinder Cuts that you have already shaded. (Don’t change the values!) Determine what the volume of the rock is based on the pictures. If the rock has a mass of 10 g, what is the DENSITY of this rock? NOTEBOOK PRACTICE

1.At the lab tables, there are a set of Density Cubes. 2.For this activity, you will find the MASS of 2 different cubes and write it in your notebook. 3.You will then find the VOLUME of each cube by measuring the LENGTH, WIDTH and HEIGHT of each cube and using the formula to calculate the VOLUME. Write this in your notebook. 4.You will then determine the DENISTY of each cube using the Density Formula. Show all of the calculations in your notebook. 5.Now answer these questions under your calculations in your notebook. A.Do all three cubes have the same density? B.Can you find out what these cubes are made of knowing the density? Use your phone and the internet to determine what your cubes are made and write this in your notebook. DENSITY PRACTICE LAB
