Their back sides are marked with olive brown to black spots as well as orange to red spots. Breeding Males develop a long, hooked jaw. 4. Rainbow Trout Rainbow trout generally range from 7-20 inches in total length. Typically rainbow trout are olive green with a brassy to purple radiance. Their back sides are marked with dark olive to black spots. The mid side markings include a wide red, pink or purple band. 5. Brook Trout Generally range from 6-16 inches in total length, tending to grow larger in larger bodies of water. They have a dark base coloration with a pale pattern of spots. Breeding male brook trout are medium to dark olive with a pale yellow-olive pattern. Their sides contain small scattered red spots.
