1 States of Matter: Lesson 42 Vinegar and Oil Mixture
Expectations: 1. Listen carefully 2. Work hard 3. Be responsible

2 Review: Different states of matter can be mixed together to create a mixture. There are many ways to separate the substances in a mixture. One way to separate different liquids is through chromatography.  We make and use mixtures everyday.

3 Separating heterogeneous mixtures:

4 Decantation: Today we will make a heterogeneous mixture out of vinegar and oil. What do you think will happen when we mix these two liquids? How can we use decantation to separate the two liquids again?

5 Experiment: Document camera experiment:

6 Results: The oil and vinegar did not stay well mixed.
If we tip the container slowly we can separate the vinegar by pouring it from the top. If we flip the container so the opening is at the bottom we can pour out the oil from the bottom. Why do you think the oil gathered at the bottom?

7 Decantation: Decantation is when we use the weight of different substances in a liquid to allow us to pour off one of the substances. This can be done with two liquids that do not mix well or with a liquid and solid (like muddy water).

8 Assignment: Draw a picture of a time during your day that you see or use decantation to separate two substances. Write a sentence about your picture. Example: My sister uses decantation when she washes rice, the water pours off while the rice stays at the bottom of the dish.

9 I had fun learning and working with you today!
Keep your eyes open, scientist!  I will see you for our next lesson.
