12 Toward a Green, Healthy, Vision Zero Increased walking and biking are strongly associated with decreased obesity and diabetes rates. Cities with higher numbers of pedestrian and bicycle commuters experience lower crash injuries and fatalities per mile traveled. Philadelphia’s bicycle commute rate has more than doubled in recent years without an increase in the number of crashes. Much more can be done to increase the safety and attractiveness of walking and biking in Philadelphia, and these changes will hold promise for improving the city’s health.
