2 Timeline 800 BC The Taino arrived in the region
1451 Columbus is born in Italy 1484 Columbus presents his ideas to sail to the Indies by sailing west April 1492 King and Queen of Spain agree to Columbus’s westward voyage

3 Timeline August 3, 1492 Columbus leaves Spain
October 12, 1492 Columbus sees land October 14, 1492 Columbus starts to think about slavery Nov 12, 1492 Columbus kidnaps 10 Tainos Nov 17 Two of the captives escape Dec 9 Columbus names the island Espanola

4 Timeline Dec 25, 1492 Columbus’s ship the Santa Maria hits rocks off the coast of Espanola Dec 26, 1492 Columbus realizes he will have to leave men behind

5 Timeline Jan Columbus leaves Hayti and leaves behind 39 men and orders them to find gold Jan 13 First skirmish between the Spanish and Indians

6 Timeline Feb 15 Columbus returns with relatively little in value
Mid April Columbus welcomed by Ferdinand and Isabella. They begin planning his second voyage May 28, 1493 The king and queen confirm that Columbus and his sons will be Governor of the islands discovered

7 Timeline Sept/Oct 1493 The men left behind brutally mistreat the Tainos. Sept 25, 1493 Columbus starts 2nd voyage Nov 3, 1493 Columbus lands in Dominica

8 Timline Mid Nov Columbus’s crew trap a small group of Caribs
Nov 28 Columbus finds the fort at La Navidad burned Early Feb 1494 Columbus sends ships back for supplies. Several Indians were taken as slaves

9 Timeline Feb/March Columbus uses violence against Spaniards who disobey his orders Late March/Early April Columbus is told that the Indians are preparing to attack. April 9, 1494 Hojeda takes 400 men inland and captures some native. He accuses one of theft and publically has his ears cut off

10 Timeline April 24, 1494 Columbus leaves Isabella to seek the mainland of the Indies Spring 1494 Columbus explores the coast of Jamaica June 12, 1494 Columbus, off the coast of Cuba, believes he has reached India

11 Timeline Sept 14, 1494, Columbus heads to Puerto Rico to raid for Cairb slaves, but he becomes ill Nov 1494 Mutineers return to Spain and complain to the king and queen about Columbus and claim the land is not profitable

12 Timeline Feb 1495 Columbus rounds up 1600 Tainos to be sent to Spain as slaves 1495 Columbus establishes the tribute system March 24, 1495 Taino resist and the Spanish retaliate with brutality Oct 1495 The King and queen send an investigator to Espanola. March 1496 Columbus departs for Spain July 1496 Ferdinand and Isabella agree to see Columbus

13 Timeline May 30, 1498 Columbas began 3rd voyage
July 31, 1498 Columbus sails past and names Trinidad Mid Aug Columbus lands in Espanola

14 Timeline 1500 Spaniard have established at least 7 forts in Espanola and at least 340 Gallows Aug 1500 King and queen send commissioner to take over Espanola Late Oct Columbus arrives in chains. A few months later he presents his case and demands to be reinstated as governor. He makes one more voyage, but never regains his power

15 Timeline May 20, 1506 Columbus dies
1542 Bartolome de las Casas writes that a mere 200 Tainos still live in Espanola. When Columbus arrived there were nearly 3 million
