3  Dictionary: The science of the mind or of mental states and processes.  American Psychological Association: a diverse discipline, grounded in science, but with nearly boundless applications in everyday life  What is a “science”  What is the “mind”?  What are “mental state”?  What are “mental processes”?

9  387 BC – Plato suggested that the brain is the mechanism of mental processes  1808 AD -- Franz Gall, founder of phrenology, the idea that a person's skull shape and placement of bumps on the head can reveal personality traits  1869 – Charles Darwin – Origins of Species  1886 – Sigmund Freud began practicing therapy, beginning of personality therapy  1900 – Sigmund Freud published ‘Interpretation of Dreams' marking the beginning of Psychoanalytic Thought.
