4 Wilson was President of the US during WWI, created the League of Nations, and wrote his 14 Points. Kaiser Wilhelm was the ruler of Germany. Wanted the world to see how mighty Germany had become. Let the treaty (alliance) with Russia expire. So Russia formed an alliance with France. Challenged Britain’s Navy. The colonies wanted independence. They did not get it.

5 Germany was blamed for WWI. 14 Point was the League of Nations. 1905– Defeat in the Russo Japanese War 1905– Bloody Sunday 1914-1917– WWI Romanovs 1613-1917 Provisional 1917 Bolsheviks 1917-1991 Bolsheviks New Economic Policy—People can own some business.

6 League of Nations The goal was world peace. The US is absent from this group. The League did not have a military or any means of enforcing the rules. 1,2,3,4,&5– Ottoman Empire The British and French control them under the Mandate System. The League of Nations gave Britain and France the authority to control these areas.

7 Great Depression Treaty of Versailles required that Germany pay reparations. Germany’s economy collapsed as a result. The economy in the US collapsed and the rest of the world followed. People were buying stock on margin. Oct. 1929 the stock market crashed.

8 WWII They each were dictators who wanted more land. Mandates, Germany not present at the meeting, League of Nations, War reparations. League of Nations didn’t have a way to enforce the rules. No military. US was following a policy of isolationism. Appeasement

9 Rise of the Dictators Stalin took the NEP away and focused mostly on a strict communism policy/command policy. 5-year plan was to increase production Collectivize the farms– a large government owned farm made up of smaller farms. Great Purge– Stalin’s plan to get rid of all of his enemies. Hitler hated the Jews. Hitler loved the Aryan race the most. Liebensraum– he was looking for resources. Nazi’s – Hitler’s political party

10 Mussolini was the founder of fascism. Mussolini wanted to restore the glory of Rome. He attempted to spread his imperial wings in Ethiopia. Prime Minister had the power in Japan. Japan stared invading other countries because they needed resources.

11 WWII 1939– German invasion of Poland. 1940– France quickly fell to the Nazi Invasion. 1940– Germany attacked Britain from above. 1941– Germany breaks treaty by invading the USSR. Dec. 7, 1941– Japan attacks Pearl Harbor. June 6, 1944– D-Day, Allies land in Normandy. August 1945– USA brings the war to a close with the atomic bomb.

NATO and Warsaw Pact symbolized the Cold War Germany was divided into the West (Democratic) and the East (Communism)

14 The US helped rebuild Japan. Japan lost it’s military. They all have a Democratic government.

15 Today International Monetary Fund– An international organization headquartered in DC. There are 188 countries working to foster global monetary cooperation, secure financial stability, facilitate international trade, reduce poverty around the world…

16 World Trade Organization– An intergovernmental organization which regulates international trade. North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA)– An agreement signed by Canada, Mexico, and the US, creating a trilateral rules- based trade bloc in North America. European Union– An organization of European countries that promote tariff free trade among members and use a common currency, the Euro.
