Sufferers were excluded from society. Under the rules for someone with leprosy, the man should not have approached Jesus, but his desperation can be seen from him on his knees, begging for help. The man could not have been sure Jesus would have healed him as he was an outcast. By touching the man Jesus was at risk of contracting the disease and making himself unclean. However, this act reminded the man he was a human being. It gave him his dignity back and showed him he was cared about. The man had to go to see the priest because only priests had authority to say he was cured.
