Lepers – Outcasts Mindmap facts about this disease leprosy Nerve endings die – can’t feel If you were cured, must get a bill of clean health from 2 priests before let back to society Forced to live apart, as it is contagious Forms blisters Loss of limbs, skin, flesh Caused by bacteria In Biblical times, you would have to ring a bell if you went anywhere to warn people

Jesus Heals the Man with Leprosy During each clip you need to make notes on what happens in the story.

40 A man suffering from a dreaded skin disease came to Jesus, knelt down, and begged him for help. "If you want to," he said, "you can make me clean." 41 Jesus was filled with pity, and reached out and touched him. "I do want to," he answered. "Be clean!" 42 At once the disease left the man, and he was clean. 43 Then Jesus spoke sternly to him and sent him away at once, 44 after saying to him, "Listen, don't tell anyone about this. But go straight to the priest and let him examine you; then in order to prove to everyone that you are cured, offer the sacrifice that Moses ordered." 45 But the man went away and began to spread the news everywhere. Indeed, he talked so much that Jesus could not go into a town publicly. Instead, he stayed out in lonely places, and people came to him from everywhere. The Man with Leprosy: 1:40-44

Context – Be ready to answer questions on this! In 1 st century Israel the disease was thought to be passed on by contact. Those with it were considered unclean. Sufferers were excluded from society. Under the rules for someone with leprosy, the man should not have approached Jesus, but his desperation can be seen from him on his knees, begging for help. The man could not have been sure Jesus would have healed him as he was an outcast. By touching the man Jesus was at risk of contracting the disease and making himself unclean. However, this act reminded the man he was a human being. It gave him his dignity back and showed him he was cared about. The man had to go to see the priest because only priests had authority to say he was cured.

The Man with Leprosy Read the story of Jesus healing the leper. P.106 or Mk 1:40-44 1.Summarise the story. Include how the leper asked Jesus for help, and what Jesus replied. 2.How was the leper treated before he was healed? 3.Why was it surprising that the leper asked for help? 4.Why might the leper have been surprised that Jesus touched him to heal him? 5.What do you think feeling Jesus’ touch did for the man, apart from healing him? 6.Why did the man go to see the priests? **How could this story be used to explain Jesus was against prejudice?

In the story we can see that Jesus is fully human and divine. He takes pity on the man (human) yet has the power to heal him (divine). We can see that Jesus’ mission is to help and be caring. This is reflected in the work of Father Damien.
