Upper Key Stage 2 Calculation Workshop

Year 5 Addition and Subtraction Addition Your child will be using the column method when adding whole numbers and decimal numbers greater than digits. 172.83 + 54.68 227.51 1 1 1 Subtraction As with addition, your child will be using the column method and working with whole number and decimals greater than four digits.

Year 5 Multiplication Multiplication – The Grid Method

Year 5 Multiplication Multiplication – The Standard Written Method 324 X 43 12000 (40x300) 800 (40x20) 160 (40x4) 900 (3x300) 60 (3x20) 12 (3x4) 13932 1 1

Year 5 Multiplication Multiplication – The Compact Written Method 324 X 43 972 (3 x 324) 12960 (40 x 324) 13932 1 1

Year 5 Division Division – The Bus Stop Method

Year 5 Division Division – The Chunking Method

Operations in Year 6 Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and Division Continue to refine written methods learnt in year 5. Calculate with decimals, including those with different numbers of decimal places and numbers to 10,000,000. Fractions and Decimals Children should use their calculation skills to calculate fractions and decimals. 1/4 x 1/8 = 2.5 + 0.05 3/4 - 4/6 = 4 3/4 + 6 4/6 = Indices Children should understand that the index of a number says how many times to use the number in a multiplication. Additional Missing Numbers They should be able to answer missing number questions which include those with algebraic representations and balancing. E.g. (20 – a) x 3 = 45 10a (15 – a) = 100- (9 x 9) what is a?

Ideas for Home Games that involve addition, e.g. Uno, Scrabble, Monopoly. Beat the calculator. Cooking Shopping Darts

Real Life Problems Go shopping with your child to buy two or three items. Ask them to work out the total amount spent and how much change you will get. Buy some items with a percentage extra free. Help your child to calculate how much of the product is free. Plan an outing during the holidays. Ask your child to think about what time you will need to set off and how much money you will need to take. Use a TV guide. Ask your child to work out the length of their favourite programmes. Can they calculate how long they spend watching TV each day / each week? Use a bus or train timetable. Ask your child to work out how long a journey between two places should take? Go on the journey. Do you arrive earlier or later than expected? How much earlier/later? Help your child to scale a recipe up or down to feed the right amount of people. Work together to plan a party or meal on a budget. These are just a few ideas to give you a starting point. Try to involve your child in as many problem-solving activities as possible. The more ‘real’ a problem is, the more motivated they will be when trying to solve it.
