Technical University of Denmark Radar Deployment and Results IIP Team

2 of 14 Background Radars –Installation in Calgary Measure antenna pattern –to measure ice thickness, image ice bed and map layers at depth Antennas –Twin Otter Antenna arrays Equipment rack

3 of 14 Background-- Specifications VHF Radar To measure thickness, map layers and image ice-bed interface –Center freq = 150 MHz –Bandwidth = 20 MHz –Loop sensitivity > 210 dB –Depth resolution = 3-4.5 m in ice –Image Resolution –Cross-track= 40-100 m –Along track= 100 m Swath width –Min= 1000 m –Maximum~1500 m

4 of 14 Sample Results

5 of 14 A-scopes

6 of 14 Noise problem The laser had to be operated to get the INS data. The laser increased the noise floor by about 10 dB every now and then (it was triggering at 5 kHz). –From Pannir on May 23, 2006

7 of 14 Issues Calibration –To determine imbalance in channels Amplitude Phase –Ocean data We are analyzing these data –Noise problem Radiated noise

8 of 14 Wet surfaces

9 of 14 Sample results Depth sounder mode SAR image mosaic (Paden, 2006)

10 of 14 Higher frequency

11 of 14 Summary The mission is successful –Obtained good data for the IIP project –Collected a good data set over fast flowing glaciers –Data are being processed.
