3 What were some of George Washington’s accomplishments as President of the United States?

4 Vocabulary: Inauguration – -the official ceremony to make someone president. Cabinet – - a group chosen by the President to help him run the executive branch and give advice. political party – - a group of people who share similar ideas about government. interest – - what people pay to borrow money capital – - the city where the government meets

5 The First President The Constitution set up a system for electing the President. Each state chose representatives for a group called the Electoral College. In 1789, the members of the Electoral College elected George Washington as our first President.

6 Inauguration George Washington knew that he had to set a good example for others to follow. In 1789, during his inauguration, he promised to “preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States.” Since then, every President has made the same promise.

8 Washington’s Government Three departments were created to help run the executive branch This group of people were known as the Cabinet. They would help the President and give him advice. Washington chose people that he could trust.

9 Washington’s Cabinet Thomas Jefferson- Secretary of State Alexander Hamilton- Secretary of Finance Henry Knox – Secretary of War Edmund Randolph – Attorney General

11 Different Points of View Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton argued about the role of the government. Hamilton wanted a strong national government that supported trade and manufacturing. Jefferson said the government should be limited and support farming instead of trading.

12 Political Parties Jefferson and Hamilton both had followers who formed political parties. People supporting Jefferson formed the Democratic-Republican party. People supporting Hamilton were known as the Federalist party.

13 Federalist Party VS Democratic- Republican Party Hamilton and Jefferson often gave the President opposite advice. Hamilton wanted to start a national bank. He believed that it would make the nation wealthier and stronger.

14 Federalist Party VS Democratic- Republican Party Jefferson said the government did not have the power to create the bank. Washington took Hamilton’s advice and approved the law that created a national bank. It would control all of the money of the United States.

16 Money in the Bank How would the bank get the money ? People would begin saving money and put it into a savings account. The bank would borrow from the savings account and pay people interest for using their money. The people would borrow money from the bank and pay interest to borrow it.

17 New Capital A Capital is a city where the government meets. Hamilton and Jefferson agreed to locate the new nation’s capital between Virginia and Maryland. President Washington chose the exact location and it was named Washington D.C.

19 Final Term President George Washington retired as President after 8 years. (2 terms) In his final speech, he advised people NOT to form political parties. He said it would divide the people in the nation. He also advised the nation to stay out of wars between other countries. He said to not take sides in foreign wars.
