3 Health Promotion & Education Services
Family Planning 4 branches of support available to your school community Health Promotion & Education Services Teacher Training (PD) - A range of standard and customised trainings for staff covering a wide range of topics. Consultancy & advice e.g. support around programme design, policy change or development. Support for community consultation. Open and honest parent workshops. PDs - We have: Standard 1 day PDs on set dates at family Planning, or we can come out to you Tailored Pds, full length or shortened at Family Planning or a venue of yours Consultancy advice and support: We can: Help with policy development e.g do staff know what to do if they receive a disclosure about sexual abuse? Is there a policy in place? Assist with programme development or lesson planning – Our resources really make this easy Help with new initiatives that you may want to implement e.g unisex bathrooms to make the school a safer more supportive environment for trans students. Extra support for those that need it in most any area except direct facilitation of programmes. Community consultation: Compulsory at least every 2 years, very important in terms of getting parent and community support for sexuality education programme as well as ensuring the content of the programme is being aimed at the right level. Open and honest sessions Workshops we hold with parents to help them talk to their children about these topics and help support their learning, at the end of the day, they are the biggest educators. Looks at things such as how to answer tricky questions, or mapping out the outcomes they want for their children and breaking it down to actionable things they can do to support this in the now.

17 4. Communicate To really get your message across as a health promoter you will need to be adaptable and observant in your communication. Different audiences need different language and methods of communication. Seek feedback and pay attention to reactions. When you’re not sure ask and avoid making assumptions.

18 Communication Skills While activities like this are fun and engaging they also give people a chance to practice non-verbal communication. This is one example of a skill building activity not only does it help build skills it lets participants experience success before tackling more difficult activities.

19 Tailoring communication
Know your audience! Age Literacy levels Culture Abilities, sensory impairments etc. Gender, sexual orientation etc. Prior knowledge.

20 Tailoring communication
Think about what you might be saying/implying unintentionally. For instance we use unplanned pregnancy not accidental or unwanted pregnancy. Why could that be important?

21 5. Lead We provide: Evidence briefings summarising research and advocating best practice. Professional development training for teachers, youth/community workers etc. Consultation advice and support including supporting policy development. We advocate for best practice and rights as an everyday part of all of our work.

22 6. Assess Needs assessment should become a habit, if we don’t find out what people need and want we will rarely be able to meet those needs. Formal and informal, large projects & small Asking direct questions Observations Research Evaluations Focus groups Consultation

23 Triangulate Get 3 sources of information.
