2 PROBLEM Although convenient, plastic water bottles are not always recycled 3 million water bottles a day are thrown away Take up space in landfills Burned with trash Causes a greenhouse effect and pollution Many water bottles are also littered

3 PROBLEM (cont’d) Harmful metal contaminants released by recycled plastic water bottles Through process called leaching, plastic water bottles provide potential threat to humans as well as environment

4 REUSABLE WATER BOTTLE PROBLEM Reusable water bottles contain Bisphenol A (BPA) increases the risk of degenerative disease obstructs fertility Experiment showed that BPA seeps into contained water EcoCare™ and Tritan™ are BPA free

5 POTENTIAL ACTION Get rid of plastic water bottles completely Australian town of Bundanoon banned plastic water bottles First known city in the world Not very practical move Businesses that sell bottled water decline Businesses should sell reusable water bottles instead

6 WHERE DOES THAT LEAVE US? Plastic bottles are a disaster for the environment Reusable water bottles can have harmful effects on the human body HOW CAN WE TRANSPORT WATER WHILE STILL BEING ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY AND WITHOUT RISK?

7 SOLUTION: OOHO! THE EDIBLE WATER BOTTLE Taking place as one of the twelve winners at the 2014 Lexus Design Awards,developers Rodrigo Garcia Gonzalez, Pierre Pasalier, and Guillaume Couche from Skipping Rocks Lab created the “Ooho! The Ooho! is a blob-like sack of water made of biodegradable ingredients making it more friendly to the environment than the alternative, plastic water bottles Wow Factor: the Ooho!’s blob container is edible!

8 HOW IT’S MADE The Ooho is made of an originally frozen sphere of ice that is coated in a gel consisting of a compound of sodium alginate from brown algae and calcium chloride.

9 IMPLEMENTATION The creators of Ooho received a grant from the European Union in order to expand on the product and begin distribution. They can also be made at home with new DIY recipes for edible water bottles coming out every day.
