2 Critical Components Commit to a common purpose and approach to discipline— creating a safe and welcoming culture that includes student voice and family/community involvement Establish and maintain team… with administrator support, participation and leadership Establish a clear set of positive expectations and behaviors Establish procedures for teaching expected behavior Establish a continuum of procedures for encouraging expected behaviors Establish a continuum of procedures for discouraging inappropriate behaviors Establish a system for using data to make decisions, progress monitor, and problem-solve 2

5 Obtaining staff commitment can sometimes be a daunting task… HISTORICALLY ONE OF THE BIGGEST CHALLENGES… TEACHERS ALREADY HAVE WAY TOO MUCH TO ADD “ONE MORE THING”

6 ONE COMMON RESPONSE.. “The principal should MAKE them…” WHAM!!! 1

7 DOESN’T WORK WITH KIDS.. Won’t work with adults either 1

8 SUPPORTING SOCIAL COMPETENCE AND ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT

9 THE BEHAVIORALLY DISORDERED… NOPE, NOT DOING IT! ME EITHER!

10 THE THREATENED… Asking for something beyond their skill set Feel they “should” know and might get “in trouble” 2

11 EXPERIENCES WE FACE WHEN IMPLEMENTING MBI

12 Maybe They Feel Like This… High above the crowd, Rex tried to remain focused. Still, he couldn’t shake one nagging thought: He was an old dog and this was a new trick.

13 The Jimmy Crack Corn Syndrome… and I don’t care… Do the bare minimum Unfortunately…reinforced by the system 2

14 THE OVERWHELMED… MAJORITY Too much work One more thing Don’t think it will work anyhow

15 ASK “WHY?”  What are they thinking? 1

16 It works for the staff, too. 3-5% INDIVIDUALS (FEW) 10-15% TARGETED GROUPS (SOME) 80% UNIVERSALS (MOST). Remember the triangle?... Research indicates that effective teams have full support and participation from at least 80% of staff. 2

17 So what DO you do when some teachers are refusing to play the game?

18 MAKE SURE THEY SEE THE “BIG PICTURE”  The goal is to establish a positive school climate that maximizes TEACHING and LEARNING 1

19 IF YOUR STAFF IS NOT FAMILIAR WITH MBI/PBIS  Show all staff one of two videos: “Discovering School-Wide MBI: Moving Toward a Positive Future” or “Creating the Culture of Positive Behavior Supports ”

20 TALK ABOUT THE NEED… Is there problem behavior? What are the problems? 2 So provide suggested readings: - “MBI Fast Facts” - “So You Want to Reduce Misbehaviors?” (pp. 23-26)

21 ASK THEM TO COME HELP FIX IT… 1

22 CHALLENGES BECOME EASIER TO OVERCOME WITH TEAMWORK… We are all more effective working together than we are working independently.

23 DECISIONS ARE MADE BY A TEAM AND SITE Remember: MBI involves all of us – we decide what our focus will be – we decide how we will monitor – we decide what our goals are – we decide what we’ll do to get there – we evaluate our progress – we decide whether to keep going or change

24 ADD A DIFFERENT VOICE… Someone from the outside can…  Be unaware of the “politics”  Ask the tough questions  Make observations… not judgments Don’t worry, I’ll set them straight about MBI 2

25 STOP… START… Telling me what WON’T work  Telling me what WILL 1

26 SHOW ME THE DATA… The best positive reinforcement for most educators is seeing kids learn and succeed. 1

27 IF YOUR STAFF IS NOT FAMILIAR WITH MBI/PBIS After completing any survey share the results with your staff.

28 GETTING STAFF TO BUY-IN TO ADOPTING MBI Determine if a majority (80%) of your staff are interested and support implementing MBI at your site

29 ACKNOWLEDGE AND SUPPORT… Reinforce the staff who DO play.

31 STRATEGIES TO HELP: RESPOND TO COMMON ARGUMENTS AGAINST MBI  “My responsibility is to teach academics.”  “I don’t have enough time.”  “I’m already meeting the behavioral needs of my students.”  “I don’t believe in rewarding students for something they should already be doing.”

32 STRATEGIES TO HELP: DEVELOP A FEEDBACK PROCESS  MBI Feedback Form MBI is a school-wide initiative. Your feedback is very important to us. I would like to:  Offer a suggestion  Volunteer my services or time  Lodge a complaint  Ask a question  Acknowledge a success  Ask for help - If lodging a complaint, please offer a suggestion What do you think? Your opinion matters. 1
