1 What will I have to do on the SBAC? As you read through the types of questions you may be asked on the SBAC, indicate whether or not you feel prepared for the task.

2 Read a passage (fiction or non-fiction) and answer the following types of questions: Making inferences based on the text Using context clues to figure out word meanings Identifying the author’s purpose Drawing conclusions based on the text Recognizing causes and effects Explain the purpose or effect of figurative language You may also be asked to highlight supporting details Multiple choice

3 Read a passage (fiction or non-fiction) and answer the following types of writing prompts: Provide the central idea (theme) of the text and provide textual evidence Give textual support to support a conclusion Explain how the author’s use of dialogue helps the reader understand the characters. Use evidence from the text.

4 Read a student draft (narrative, informational, or argumentative) and complete the following types of activities: Insert a transition sentence Remove sentences that are not necessary Select language that is appropriate for the audience and task Add important evidence to writing Identify the correct use of commas (or other grammar and punctuation rules)

5 Listen to an audio presentation and answer the following types of questions: Recall information from the presentation Visualize as you listen Form an opinion and include details from the presentation for support Explain why the speaker includes certain details or examples in the presentation Identify the purpose of the presentation (inform, describe, entertain, convince) Select details that support a claim

6 You will be given a research scenario and be asked to complete activities such as: Read the annotations and select the best source to use for a report Selecting the best sources and information to support a claim
