1 Math CAMPPP 2011 Breakout 3 Proportional Reasoning

Session Goals Participants will: 1.Articulate the challenges and benefits of giving descriptive feedback in mathematics 2.Examine student work and identify where it belongs on the multiplicative thinking continuum 3.Collaboratively develop instructional strategies for proportional reasoning/multiplicative thinking based on student needs 22

Descriptive Feedback in Mathematics Think about the following statement: Giving descriptive feedback in mathematics is the same as giving descriptive feedback in literacy. 3

Four Corners Decide how you feel about the statement. Choose a corner of the room that reflects your feelings-Strongly Agree, Agree, Disagree or Strongly Disagree. Go to that corner and talk with the other people in your group. Share the highlights of your corner discussion with the whole group. 4

From the Plenary… 5

What do we mean by…? feedback focus comparison function clarity specific 6

Examples of Criteria and Feedback in Mathematics What do you notice about the Anne Davies and Susan Brookhart samples of criteria and feedback? Use the 3-2-1 graphic organizer as a frame, think about what you like, don’t like and what fits with your thinking. 7

Feedback with More Time… We are going to work in teams to examine student thinking and decide on what our next steps will be for the class 8

Feedback with More Time… View the video segments for your group Record what your students can do, where they are on the multiplicative thinking continuum and what you think your students need (content/process) When the Left side group and the Right side group have finished viewing, get together NOTE: You will both have seen the second student 12 Next slide for recording sheet

Presenting ‘Your’ Students Present your students Talk about what your students can do, where they are on the multiplicative thinking continuum and what you think your students need (content/process) What will be your next steps? 14

Feedback with More Time… AND… What will we do with these students tomorrow? 15

The Best Thing… In your teams, share the best thing about examining student work together today… 16

On Your Own… In your journals, list some people you would be able to partner with to try out tasks and to examine student work together. Think about how you can make it happen in the fall. What are some possible barriers and solutions? 17
