10,000 ft. Flyover Review: Jonah & Ruth Jonah Theme: “The Lord is a God of boundless compassion not just for ‘us’ (Jonah and the Israelites) but also for ‘them’ (the pagan sailors and Ninevites).”* Ruth Theme: “…God’s people experience his sovereignty, wisdom, and covenant kindness. These often come disguised in hard circumstances and are mediated through the kindness of others.”* *ESV Study Bible

People are in desperate need of the hesed of the LORD. We deserve to be struck down, but God’s hesed is continually poured out on us. Who in these books reflect God’s hesed?

God sovereignly appoints/orchestrates events to bring about His beautiful ends. Jonah’s redirection Obed’s appearance.

Yahweh shows His love and mercy toward the outsiders/non-Jews and calls them into the faith of Abraham. The mariners and Ninevites. The not-so-Jewish family.

God calls us out of self-centeredness into a place of compassion for others and trust in Him. Jonah’s preference of personal death over pagan deliverance. Naomi in her community of praise.

God is a saving, merciful God...all throughout Scripture! The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. “The LORD is my portion,” says my soul, “therefore I will hope in him.” The LORD is good to those who wait for him, to the soul who seeks him. It is good that one should wait quietly for the salvation of the LORD. (Lamentations 3:22-26 ESV)
