NASA/NSSDC Report to MOIMS DAI/IPR Plenary 1 October 2007 Heppenheim, Germany

2007-10-01 NASA/NSSDC Report to MOIMS DAI/IPR Plenary 2 NSSDC Standards Participation NSSDC hopes to continue participation in CCSDS DAI and IPR Jim Thieman will begin to support DAI and IPR, primarily beginning December 2007 NSSDC continues leadership (Jim Thieman) of SPASE (Space Physics Archive Search and Extract) NSSDC will be supporting activity with NSSDC funds Version 1.2.1 is current production release: see http://www.spase- group.org/data/http://www.spase- group.org/data/ Version 1.3.0 is under development NSSDC participates (Don Sawyer/ John Garrett) in CCSDS/ISO Repository Audit and Certification (RAC) Birds of a Feather (BoF) Evolution of RLG/NARA ‘TRAC’ document is primary focus NSSDC evolving TRAC as basis for future space science ‘resident archives’ Interest from NASA Hq

2007-10-01 NASA/NSSDC Report to MOIMS DAI/IPR Plenary 3 NSSDC Tape Migration NSSDC ‘legacy tape’ migration Production finally underway 505 data collections currently scheduled for migration 34 wholly migrated to validated AIPs 1 original tape (7trk or 9 trk) is packaged into 1 AIP/AIU 1503 tapes associated with 505 data collections 545 tapes read 127 of tapes read have been subjected to attribute validation via JIN database Approximately 25% failed attribute validation and need investigation –Expect there are a number of database errors

2007-10-01 NASA/NSSDC Report to MOIMS DAI/IPR Plenary 4 NSSDC Registration Activity NSSDC continues registration of data descriptions ADIDs being assigned for all legacy tape-based data collections undergoing migration NSSDC/WDC-SI continues Spacecraft ID registrations for CCSDS Secretariat Typically 2-3 per month

2007-10-01 NASA/NSSDC Report to MOIMS DAI/IPR Plenary 5 NSSDC Curation Scientist Support NSSDC continues re-engineering Curation Scientist interface in support of data ingest Developed Preliminary Phase attributes within an associated spreadsheet Database supports multi-party spreadsheet review process Developing a ‘bulk load’ spreadsheet for Preliminary Phase attributes Sister organization (SPDF) has over 1000 data collections to ‘submit’ Formal Phase attributes proving more difficult Context includes option to use NSSDC provided software for packaging and submission

2007-10-01 NASA/NSSDC Report to MOIMS DAI/IPR Plenary 6 NSSDC Science Archives Workshop NSSDC held the workshop in April: Science Archives in the 21st Century Focus on NASA’s Space Physics, Planetary, and Astrophysics disciplines Promote inter-archive communication and best practices 54 participants representing US Gov’t organizations (NASA, NOAA) International space agencies (ESA, ESAC,..) Academic institutions (JHU, NMSU, UCSD,..) Others (CIESIN, RAL, SWRI,…)

2007-10-01 NASA/NSSDC Report to MOIMS DAI/IPR Plenary 7 NSSDC Science Archives Workshop-Summary Establish a level of commonality: Wide participant satisfaction is evidence of a level of commonality. Interest in discussing various topics and hearing about some technologies not widely known. No particular concerns received wide agreement to the level that some specific action was needed. Identify broadly based techniques and best practices: Presentations and posters on many topics, but no focus to push or pursue them as a group. Some may do this on their own. With more time for synthesis and discussion, this aspect could have been pursued more vigorously to see if any consensus might emerge. Establish more frequent, alternative, modes of communication: Proposal to establish one or more Wiki efforts met with mixed reviews. Appears possibility of one or two small groups to address issues such as format standards or services, and then a Wiki should be useful. An e-mail reflector was felt to be useful and has been established. This may lead to additional discussions on selected topics. NSSDC is willing to lend support to focused efforts. Consensus: meeting every 2-3 years would be appropriate and useful, but that more frequent focused meetings on selected topics such as services, formats, or data models should also occur. 8 2007-10-01 NASA/NSSDC Report to MOIMS DAI/IPR Plenary 8 Research Supported by NARA National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) supports information handling and preservation research by NASA/GSFC/NSSDC NSSDC coordinates this research with CCSDS DAI and IPR activities Submitted 2nd-year report to NARA in March 2007 Investigated application of DAI and IPR work to NARA and NASA relevant data Included extension of DAI work on submissions to archives Summarized DAI and XFDU work, issues Next report due January 2008

2007-10-01 NASA/NSSDC Report to MOIMS DAI/IPR Plenary 9 Standards Development -1 DAI SIP/PAIS Standard Critiqued SIP/PAIS White Book and draft materials Numerous exchanges with CNES editor OAIS 5-year review Unable to devote resource until week of September 25 Assembled all 5-year comments and organized by OAIS document section Incorporated previous comments from Claude Began adding comments from Don Topic for Heppenheim DAI session

2007-10-01 NASA/NSSDC Report to MOIMS DAI/IPR Plenary 10 Standards Development -2 IPR - XFDU Developed editors responses to Agency Red Book review RIDS Released new version of the XFDU Schema and Toolkit library including all schema changes from Agency RIDS Developed Final Draft of XFDU BB for Panel Approval IPR - XML Schema Registry-Repository Researched and reviewed major commercial and Open Source registry and Repository products that emphasized XML Schema including: Web Service Registries/Repositories - ebXML(open source), UDDI(commercial) XML/Relational DB Repositories -IBM(DB2 component), Oracle XML Interoperation and Governance- igniteXML(commercial), TIBCO XML Canon (commercial) Developing a prototype and a white paper of an XML Schema Registry and Repository using the Open Source freebXML product. This prototype will provide experience on both the quality of the freebXML product and proof of concept of various Registry and Repository interfaces and data structure that will be documented in the white paper XML Guidelines SIG Developing new version of CCSDS XML Schema Namespace and Versioning based on new OASIS UBL and W3C approaches Developing a new version of IETF RFC to obtain a CCSDS URN domain based on ISO URN RFC and OASIS Naming and versioning Recommendatioons
