1 Some years ago, CarTech CEO told us: What I want to see in our new hires is: 1. They know a good bit of materials science The projects you work on involve lots of materials science 2. They write and speak well This course has lots of speaking and writing 3. They know how to work in groups In this course, you work in teams 4. 3 Major course objectives Scientists, engineers have incredible amount of technical, semi-technical, & non-technical material to digest almost daily Must be able to read, comprehend material instantly Question: If your writing is difficult to understand, who will have time to read it? Question: If your writing is difficult to understand, who will have time to read it? Delays in reading of even fractions of a second frustrating 4. Develop speaking/writing skills — — WHY?

Students selected by lot at beginning of class, Only one member of team will lead a class discussion on any day. Students who have led discusssions will have their names removed from the stack until sometime later in the term. b. These informal talks will be graded. More discussion by class members = better grade. c. Begin in 2 weeks. d. Be prepared to lead a discussion every class period. e. Computer visuals req'd. All diagrams, tables, lists, text materials must be presented using computer. f. Appropriate to raise questions that arise during your reading and research in class discussions.
