Chesapeake Bay Research BY: Noah Satin

Why is it important to have a variety of living things in the bay? It is important to have a variety of living things in the bay. Phytoplankton is important to the bay because it’s a reproducer and provides food for other organisms. Oysters are important to the bay because it eats the harmful organisms that usually kill animals much bigger than itself. My research will show that Phytoplankton and oysters are major factors in the bay.

Phytoplankton Phytoplankton are important. They provide food for the other organisms. They are very small, so they are near the bottom of the food chain. They are actually very healthy, so they are are resourceful to humans. Phytoplankton actually means “Green Celled Wonderers” in Greek. Phytoplankton are actually single plants. They look bigger because they bunch up. Phytoplankton are the smallest type of plankton. Algae, another type of organism, are one of the biggest threats to Phytoplankton. Zooplankton, about the same size as Phytoplankton, is also a big threat.

Amazing Oysters! They are like the heroes of the bay. They keep everything safe in the spot they’re in. They are algae eaters. That means that they are the ones that eat harmful plants/animals. They stay in one spot for their whole life, so they don’t decrease in population. They help the bay a lot. People are trying to repopulate oysters because they help so much. They are one of the many animals that have a giant part in the bay. Every bay animal plays a part in the bay, but oysters play a VERY big part. One of the biggest threats to oysters are humans. A lot of people eat them as seafood.

Conclusion I learned that oysters are one of the most important animals in the bay. Also that phytoplankton is not just important to the bay, but is very healthy to humans. Phytoplankton are decomposers. That means that they break down waste, and turn that waste into food. Oysters eat harmful organisms so they don’t eat other animals, or kill other animals.
