Exposition of Genesis 1-11 The Flood Part III Gen 7:1-12

Systematic Theology in Gen 1-11 God (Theology Proper) –Creator of all things –Judge –Savior, from the curse of sin and from the flood –Requires obedience that originates from the heart Man (Anthropology) –Made in God’s image, male and female –God’s regent over creation Sin (Harmatiology) –Entered in through the first man –Brought death and a curse upon the ground –Grew worse in mankind with each successive generation Salvation (Soteriology) –Noah and his family in the ark

The Overall Structure of Genesis Key Word: tdol.AT, “The generations of...” –the Heavens and the Earth (2:4 – 4:26) –Adam (5:1 – 6:8) –Noah (6:9 – 9:27) –Sons of Noah (10:1 – 11:10) –Shem (11:10-26) –Terah (11:27 – 25:11) –Ishmael (25:12-18) –Isaac (25:19 – 35:29) –Esau (36:1 – 37:1) –Jacob (37:2 – 50:14)

Noah Commanded to Enter the Ark Gen 7:1-5 The ark was now finished, and Noah and his family are commanded to enter it. –In contrast to the corruption of the earth which the Lord saw, here He has seen that Noah alone was righteous among this generation. In addition to the two of every species that the Lord will bring to the ark, Noah is to take seven pairs of clean animals and birds. –Though not explicitly stated here, the five extra pairs of clean animals will be used for sacrifice (8:20) and food (9:3). –The male and female pairs are necessary to preserve each species.

Noah Commanded to Enter the Ark Gen 7:1-5 The task of loading the animals and food on the ark would take six full days; on the seventh the flood would begin. –While a worldwide, continuous rain of 40 days and nights may not be possible in today’s atmospheric conditions, it was then. –Again, as earlier in 6:7 and again in 7:23, the purpose is stated as to “blot out from the land every living thing which I have made.”

Noah and the Animals Enter the Ark (Gen 7:6-9) The chronology of the flood is dated by Noah’s age; we will look at this in more detail later. These verses declare that what was commanded was fulfilled: Noah, his family, and the requisite pairs of animals all entered the ark. –Consider the spectacle and witness of animals coming from all over the land to board the ark. –Noah and his family were the last to enter as the flood waters began (7:7).

The Flood Begins Gen 7:10-12 On the seventh day the flood waters came as predicted. We have here a more precise description of this day: “the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, on the seventeenth day of the month.” –This will be especially important as look at the end date of the flood.

The Flood Begins Gen 7:10-12 The water bursts forth from two sources: –the fountains of the great deep –the windows of heaven Again it is stated that it rained continuously for 40 days and 40 nights.
