2  There are tens of thousands of islands here. Most are either coral or volcanic. The islands have been known as the Fantasy Islands since 1521.  The pacific can be divided into 3 regions. The whole area is called Oceania. About the Pacific

3  There are several major North American airlines that fly to these places from West Coast and Hawaii.  The foreign Airlines include Qantas, Air New Zealand, Air France, and a lot of Asian carriers.  When the travelers get to the gateway they in Papeete, Tahiti, Nadi, Fiji, or Guam they’ll need to get on the local airlines. 4  Since the Pacific lies within the tropics its very predictable.  In Polynesia and Melanesia, May through October (Winter Season) is warm, fairly dry, and high tourist season.  In November through April (Summer Season) it is hotter, wetter, and sees a thinning of tourists. Weather Patterns

5  Papeete (Tahiti) in August you get rain about one day a week.  Pago Pago someone here may get rain about every other day. Weather Patterns

6  You can rent a car, a taxis, or you can fly to other islands. People use bikes and mopeds, and there are cruises that connect the islands. Getting Around

7  Three Important Places: Polynesia, Melanesia, and Micronesia  Polynesia  The name “conjures up the scent of the plumeria blossoms” and you hear the friendly voices and you feel the warm azure waters lapping at your feet. Important Places

8  Tahitian Islands  These islands are also known as the Society Islands comprise the western part of French Polynesia and it the main gateway for 130 or more islands.  Tonga  It has spectacular scenery and its full of active volcanoes and boaters love the Tongatapu islands. Important Places

9  Melanesia  Its better known to Australians and New Zealanders. The islands are becoming destinations that appeal to Americans. There are nearly 1200 languages spoken.  The Fiji Islands  It’s a very important island on the Viti Levu which has many tropical hotels. 10  Micronesia  There are thousands of islands but they're all small and Isolated. There is one island called the Bikini Islands and it has become permanently associated with that name because of its shape like a bathing suit. Important Places

11  Guam  Its Micronesia’s principal destination. It’s the United States air connection to Hawaii. The capital, Agana and Tumon Bay are highly frequented by Japanese and Taiwanese tourists. Travelers who are into water sports, history (World War II), Golf, and others comforts typical of the United Stars will find Guam appealing. Important Places
